‘Grapes from a site situated on the highest and more wind-exposed part of the slope at an altitude of 290m above sea level. 30% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 11 months in 228-litre barrels, 35% new. Red and black cherry, potpourri, herbs, earth and spice on the nose while the palate is full bodied and well structured – concentrated fruit, fresh acidity and firm but not coarse tannins, the finish distinctly dry. ‘It wasn’t easy to make great Pinot Noirs in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in 2023, but using sorting tables helped. Windansea is a mix of mostly the 115 clone, with a little 115 and 777 and benefitted from its northern exposure. Sweetly wooded in 27% new oak, it has firmish tannins, notes of mint and petrichor and a savoury, stony palate of redcurrant and tomato leaf. 2025-30’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2024, 94/100
‘And indeed it does! Darker fruit (not black, though, just darker), more forward, peppery and real grip to the tannins. Dramatically grippier. Power over grace. Mulberry, even a tiny bit of damson, cherry, mushroom. Forest-floor violets. Like the Seadragon, though, it also signs off with a pretty little rose-hip flourish of sweetness.
