‘Notes of smoke and spice open up in this dessert wine, while white chocolate, candied orange peel and quince paste flavors form the core. Not especially intense, but the elements show beautiful harmony and the acidity imparts amazing drive and freshness. This can age longer, but is delicious now.’ – Wine Spectator, 96/100

‘Nineteen seventy-six was a taste of what was to come in 2003 - it was a drought year with high temperatures that were not particularly conducive to botrytis. The result is a rather quiet sweet 1976 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon - not showy in aromas nor opulent in sweetness. It displays a deep golden color, reflecting its 40-plus years in bottle. The nose is understated albeit slightly high toned, reminiscent of burnt orange, toffee apple and ground almonds. It's a sweet style but it retains a focused core and despite its sweetness, it shows a lightness of touch. Considering the heat and the dry of the season, the acidity provides enough refreshment on the finish. 2021 – 2028.’ – Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous

‘Polished. Light appearance. Yellow/orange. Good graduation. Clean on the nose, if a little closed and not very expressive. The palate is much more open, with a faintly high-toned presence. Racy acidity, the volatility adds to the overall complexity. A little phenolic grip to the finish. This is a surprisingly light and delicate wine for what was, for the time, a very hot vintage.’ – Richard Kelley MW

Producer information One of the world’s largest and oldest wine stocks can be found at Moulin Touchais, established in 1787, on the banks of the Layon River in the Loire Valley. Comprising of about 2 million bottles dating back to the mid-19th century, Moulin Touchais guarantees its customers a century of longevity. The estate is renowned for a sweet Chenin aged for a minimum of 10 years in their seemingly endless cellars. The longevity and complexity of their wines is linked to a harvesting strategy where they pick at various stages for freshness and concentration and then bottle early – between 6-8 months after harvest.
