‘This is starting to dry out, with prominent acidity running through and imparting energy and balance. Flavors of light marzipan, dried apricot, honeysuckle and sweetened green tea mingle nicely. This would be a great wine on a dinner table, especially with something like duck à l'orange or foie gras.’ – Wine Spectator, 93/100

‘All of us at the table had tasted superior examples of the 1964 Moulin Touchais previously, as this particular bottle had been sourced at auction and was probably not one hundred percent pristine. But even a slightly subpar bottle of the 1964 is still a tasty glass of wine, as it offers up a deep and tertiary blend of baked peaches and quince, sweet nutty tones, a touch of lanolin, orange peel, new leather, a bit of soil and a topnote of tea leaves. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and tangy, with a fine core, very good focus and grip and a long, complex finish. Pristine bottles are more vibrant and a bit less evolved in personality and probably merit three points higher score. 2015-2030.’ – John Gilman, View From The Cellar, 92/100

‘Very deep appearance. Orange/copper/gold, moving to green at the rim. Still very clean on the nose, showing great complexity: caramel/toffee/coffee/chocolate. All this, but still very understated. There are some apple and Calvados notes behind. The palate is really lovely. Taut and focused. This is still incredibly youthful, with a positive phenolic grip. It builds well to a persistent finish. More toffee notes to the finish. The raised acidity to the finish just aids the overall impression of the wine. The 1964 rightly claims its place as the vintage of the decade.’ – Richard Kelley MW

‘If you're looking to buy a vintage from the 1960s then 1964 and 1969 are the ones you ought to look for. The 1964 is from a warm season that offered plenty of botrytised fruit. While this Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon was lightly corked, it was still an intriguing wine, reminiscent of sweet apples, smoke, honey and, perhaps, rather earthy, although it was difficult to know if that was actually partly due to the corked effect. 2020 – 2028.’ – Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous

Producer information One of the world’s largest and oldest wine stocks can be found at Moulin Touchais, established in 1787, on the banks of the Layon River in the Loire Valley. Comprising of about 2 million bottles dating back to the mid-19th century, Moulin Touchais guarantees its customers a century of longevity. The estate is renowned for a sweet Chenin aged for a minimum of 10 years in their seemingly endless cellars. The longevity and complexity of their wines is linked to a harvesting strategy where they pick at various stages for freshness and concentration and then bottle early – between 6-8 months after harvest.
