‘Grapes from a 1986 Stellenbosch vineyard planted on shale. Fermented and matured for 10 months in old 400-litre barrels. Some smoky reduction before yellow apple, apricot, some yeasty complexity and spice. The palate is rich and broad with well-integrated acidty and a gently savoury finish. ‘This wine displays a brilliant deep straw colour. On the nose fragrant lemongrass, cassis leaf and passionfruit aromas emanate from the glass underpinned by hints of dry straw and notes of fresh brioche. There is a great intensity on the entry of the palate with flavours of quince jelly, guava and lemongrass on the mid-palate with hints of toasted almonds and a velvety creaminess. This all leads to a textured pithy finish with a stunning length and a freshness reminiscent of oyster shell.’ – Winemaker
