June value pack, sought-after Tembela releases & Grand Cru Burgundy

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Our June Wine Cellar Insiders' case is perfect for cold nights and clear winter days, easing us into the next season with some fuller whites and delicious medium-weight reds. As usual, the pack's value is hard to beat, with free shipping available anywhere in South Africa. We're also delighted to have got our hands on a small allocation of the 2021 Tembela releases, which will sell out in a flash. This week's international highlights are Joseph Drouhin's majestic Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018 from Burgundy, and the La Tache-inspired Niepoort Charme 2018 – produced from 100+ year-old vines in the Douro.

Don't miss the latest Strauss & Co auction (now live), which offers an outstanding selection of sustainable wines from Stellenbosch, Champagne, Bordeaux and beyond.

Tembela 2021 releases

Banele Vakele, Assistant Winemaker at Savage Wines and a CWG Protégé, has launched his second release this week, and we are thrilled to have a small allocation of these sought-after wines. Banele 'brings a deft touch to the winemaking', says Christian Eedes, scoring the Chenin Blanc 2021 93 points and the Syrah 2021 92 points. These wines sold out on release last year and we have no doubt that this release will follow suit.

Joseph Drouhin, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018
R 3,150 per bottle

On the slopes of the Montagne de Corton is a vast, natural amphitheatre that's home to the Grands Crus of Corton-Charlemagne and Corton. Drouhin's 2018 Corton-Charlemagne is the epitome of finesse – it's floral and mineral driven with restrained power that will take a few years to unfurl. Critics think this should last until about 2040, but it might last even longer! We had a 1981 Joseph Drouhin Corton-Charlemagne last week in the office and it was so alive, showing beautiful acidity, saltiness and amazing fruit and depth.

Niepoort, Charme 2018
R 975 per bottle

'Inspired by La Tâche, elegance and precision, intensity not density, are the goals,' says Decanter of the 2018 Niepoort Charme, awarding it 96 points. Dirk Niepoort tasted a wine blind many years ago. Was it Syrah from the Northern Rhône, with power and tannin, or Pinot Noir from Burgundy? It was La Tâche 1991! 'So tannic, yet so expressively fine and elegant,' Dirk explains. He decided to do something similar in the Douro, Portugal, and so the legendary Charme was born. The wine is produced from 100+year-old vines, picked early for freshness, with a short maceration. Sublime.

Wine Cellar Insiders', June Value Mixed 6-Pack
R 1,075 per case

Our June Insiders' pack features the Laing Semillon, which never disappoints with its waxy roundness and mineral acidity, ideal for roasts and risottos. The Oak Valley Riesling's texture and slight fruit sweetness pairs well with any Asian recipe – a great substitute for Sauvignon Blanc, while the Hartenberg Chardonnay 2019 has a perfectly balanced fruit-to-oak ratio and lots of aromatic spice – it's winter sunshine in a glass. For the reds, the Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is elegant and youthful but approachable, with lots of juicy tannin. And offering something different from the Rhône, Pesquié Le Paradou 2019 is a crunchy and delicious Grenache. Complementing dessert, or pre/post-dinner fireplace conversation, why not open a bottle of the Niepoort Tawny Port from the Douro. A special treat for any occasion.
