Our September Value Braai Case, top volcano wines, & more

Dear *|FNAME|*,

The wines of Terre Nere are some of our most popular imports, so we were delighted to see them recognised in Wine & Spirits Magazine Top 100 wineries for 2022 in August! We’re also celebrating Beaujolais this week and the wines of Château de la Chaize, which is located at the foot of Mont Brouilly, with its rich terroir of volcanic rocks. On home soil, Glenelly Lady May 2016 was recently awarded 95+ points, while Leeu Passant’s Wellington Old Vine Cinsault 2018 shone brightly at our Women’s Month tasting with Pichulik.

Don’t miss our September Insiders’ Braai Case, which offers terrific value and is the perfect introduction to spring. And lastly, we’ve just listed our favourite tool for removing tricky, fragile corks from mature wines – the Durand Vintage Cork Remover.

Glenelly Lady May 2016
R 695 PER BOTTLE

Heralded as ‘their greatest wines to date’, Greg Sherwood recently scored the 2016 Lady May from Glenelly 95+ points. The Lady May has reached icon status and this is one of the last few vintages created by Luke O’Cuinneagain’s deft hand. This wine thrills, seduces the senses and certainly impresses, says Sherwood – we couldn’t put it more eloquently. Make space in your cellar for this one.

Durand Vintage Cork Remover
R 2,600

We’ve seen a significant increase in demand for vintage wines over the last few years. With this comes the likelihood of a fragile or ‘compromised’ cork. The Durand Vintage Cork Remover is the most consistent, reliable tool we’ve found. We’ve been using it regularly for years and are so excited to offer it to you. It’s a no-brainer investment for anyone who collects or drinks mature wines.

Beaujolais – Château de la Chaize’s 2019s
from R 340 per bottle

The charm of Gamay makes it easy to fall head over heels in love with Beaujolais’, as experienced by Neal Martin. It offers the intrigue of Pinot Noir at a fraction of the price, with vibrant red and blueberry fruit married with Christmas cake spice and earthy savouriness. The 2019s from Château de la Chaize are ‘the best they've produced to date’, according to Wine Spectator. Try their powerful and age-worthy Côte de Brouilly Lieu-Dit Brûlhier 2019, from a single-vineyard parcel on an extinct volcano, through to their playful yet structured Chaize Brouilly Les Deux Amis 2019.

Terre Nere Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2018
R 875 PER BOTTLE

The Wine & Spirits Magazine announced their Top 100 wineries for 2022 earlier in August. Terre Nere, with its volcanic vineyard wines, was the only Sicilian winery to receive this accolade in 2022. Their 2018 Calderara Sottana is produced from the stoniest and grandest cru at Terre Nere and shares the velvety power one associates with top Burgundian terroir. This medium to full-bodied red is all perfume and spice, with a racy, mineral acidity and saline finish. Ethereally elegant, says Wine Enthusiast.

Leeu Passant Wellington Old Vines Basson Cinsault 2018
R 650 PER BOTTLE

Made from one of the oldest vineyards in the country – circa 1900, the Leeu Passant Wellington Old Vine Cinsault 2018 is in a beautiful drinking window but is expected to last another 30 years, according to Greg Sherwood. We tasted it at our Women’s Month wine tasting last week and it was the highlight of the evening for many of us. We have a few bottles left, so snap them up while you can – this wine is incredibly charming.
