The Polkadraai Heuwels Chenin 2020, from Young Guns Danie and Hugo Carinus, has been rated 94 points by Greg Sherwood. Adi Badenhorst’s rockstar Kalmoesfontein White 2020 is another must-buy, while Dorper Pinotage 2020 impressed us at a recent tasting with winemaker Reg Holder. Bringing the excitement on the international front is Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana from Terre Nere – the “Burgundy of the Mediterranean”. Finally, Vilafonté Series M 2019 continues to epitomise luxury fine wine.

Terre Nere, Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana 2019
R 750 per bottle
If you’re a lover of Burgundy and Barolo, this wine is for you. The captivating 97-point Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso 2019 is quintessential Terre Nere. Elegantly structured with firm tannins, it is considered the “Burgundy of the Mediterranean”. This 2019 Nerello Mascalese, with a touch of Nerello Cappuccio (2%), is aromatically expressive, radiant and classically structured. It’s a great prelude to the diversity of the mineral-rich, stony terroir that makes this Sicilian property so special.

Carinus, Polkadraai Heuwels Chenin Blanc 2020
R 335 per bottle
Young Guns Danie and Hugo Carinus have produced a pure expression of Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc with "perfect balance", says Greg Sherwood, who recently scored it 94 points! The wine shows bright notes of white peach, yellow apple and baking spices, leading to a welcoming palate of fresh-cut honey melons, slate and salinity, with dried fynbos notes to finish. Don’t miss out on this awesome Chenin.

Vilafonté, Series M 2019
R 990 per bottle
The fine wine community is already abuzz with the new Series M release, following its 97-point rating from Greg Sherwood. The 2019 has all the hallmarks of a top-end luxury red: polish, fine-boned structure, and a sweet-fruited core. This is a very seductive Series M that will have many followers in its youth, but it will reward the patient. Considering Vilafonté’s strong release price increases in recent years, we suggest that fans buy for the long-term while it’s still available below the R1 000-mark.

Dorper, Pinotage 2020
R 235 per bottle
We tasted this 95-point, old-vine Stellenbosch Pinotage with owner/winemaker Reg Holder a few weeks ago, and we were impressed. His philosophy is similar to that of village-level Burgundy – to create a Pinotage from vineyards in and around Stellenbosch. This beautifully perfumed, spicy Pinotage is bright with silky tannins. One of Tim Atkin’s favourite Pinotage releases, it’s “elegant, but not insubstantial”, says Christian Eedes. A compelling expression of the variety and region.
