Wine Cellar Weekly: New releases by Young-Gun power duo, our favourite Italian red & more

The new Khakibos and Nastergal vintages have just been released and, as with all Thistle & Weed releases, these small-batch, limited wines are likely to sell out fast. Wine writer Jamie Goode's recent review reminded us just how good Terre Nere's Etna Rosso is and we couldn't resist sharing it with you. It's one of our favourite Italian reds and the 2018 ticks all the boxes. From Elgin's organic and biodynamic winery, the Chaos White was a hit in our office and we recommend giving this complex Bordeaux white a try. Lastly, from the special Jonkershoek terroir, Stark-Condé's Cabernet Sauvignon is excellent value at under R 300.

Thistle & Weed, Khakibos White & Nastergal Red 2020
R 260 per bottle

Young Gun duo, Etienne Terblanche and Stephanie Wiid, are creating some of the most transparent, terroir-driven wines from the Cape's hidden gems. The Verdelho-dominated Khakibos 2020 has dried fynbos notes with delicate naartjie peel, zesty acidity and a layered, textured finish – a Wine Cellar favourite. The Nastergal 2020 is 56% Tempranillo, complemented by intriguing varieties such as Alicante Bouschet. With notes of sumptous cranberry, blueberry and black cherry, rounded out by baking spices and black pepper, it is an inviting, more-ish wine.

Terre Nere, Etna Rosso 2018
R 335 per bottle

Loved by revered critics, the Etna Rosso 2018 over-delivers on flavour complexity with a thrilling structure. Reviewed by Jamie Goode earlier this week, he described it as 'a beautiful expression of Nerello Mascalese and good value at R 335.' This hauntingly-alluring red from the volcanic soils of Sicily's Mt. Etna showcases bright, red fruit tightly knit together with fine spice and earthy minerality, making for a perfect pizza wine.

Elgin Ridge, Chaos White 2018
R 350 per bottle

We opened a bottle of the 2018 Elgin Ridge Chaos White at Wine Cellar HQ last week and it was a smash hit. 'While the 2017 was eye-catching, this has even more refinement about it,' wrote Christian Eedes. A Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon blend, it is lively and fresh with complex notes of dried herbs, passion fruit, ginger and walnuts. A must try from Elgin's only certified organic and biodynamic wine estate.

Stark-Condé, Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
R 290 per bottle

The sub-R300 Jonkershoek Cabernet Sauvignon from Stark-Condé placed in the Top 10 in this year's Winemag Prescient Cabernet Sauvignon Report and was awarded silver in the recent Decanter World Wine Awards. We agree with Tim Atkin MW's statement: 'very few producers make pure Jonkershoek reds, which is a shame given how special the terroir is.' This is a typical Jonkershoek Valley wine with great structure and balance.
