Wine Cellar Weekly: Not-to-be-missed Syrah, 97-pt Chardonnay & bubbly for the wine geeks

We're highlighting Reyneke's 2019 Biodynamic Syrah again as James worries that 'this standout wine release of 2021 is the one that I feel most people are missing out on'. He says, 'it is pure deliciousness, and you shouldn't overlook it.' Other wines on our radar include the 2019 Bourgogne Les Sétilles from the Olivier Leflaive stable and the recently-scored 97-point Reserve Chardonnay from Lismore. For the wine geeks, the exciting Yin and Yang duo by Graham Beck displays the contrast of a Pinot vs. Chardonnay dominant blend. Lastly, Bortolomiol's delicious Prosecco is perfect for these hot summer days.

Olivier Leflaive, Bourgogne Les Sétilles 2019
R 425 per bottle

Don't miss out on Olivier Leflaive's highly-revered 2019 Bourgogne Les Sétilles. Its attractive nose with notes of pear, florals and citrus makes for a perfectly-balanced Bourgogne Blanc. It treads the fine line between opulence and vibrant acidity. 'It has some of the elegance Puligny-Montrachet is famous for,' writes James Suckling.

Reyneke, Biodynamic Syrah 2019
R 210 per bottle

According to Neal Martin, this 'sublime', 'drop-dead gorgeous' Syrah 'leaves you wanting more' and we completely agree. As James mentioned above, this is one of last year's releases that should not be missed. Tim Atkin MW says it is the little brother to the Reserve Red and to our minds, at R210 a bottle, you cannot spend your money on anything better!

Bortolomiol, Prosecco Superiore DOCG Extra Brut Audax 2020
R 290 per bottle

This Prosecco has been a favourite at quite a few tastings over the holidays. Part of Bortolomiol's traditional collection, this is one of the driest Proseccos on the market and a seriously delicious bottle of bubbles. As an aperitif or paired with light summer dishes, this wine is a necessity during the hot summer days!

Lismore, Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2020
R 620 per bottle

This is one of SA's most emphatic, charactered Chardonnays. With both power and finesse, it's immense on the palate. Made from 100% Greyton fruit (which survived the fire of 2019), Samantha O'Keefe's 2020 was raised in 40% new oak. Christian Eedes describes it as 'a triumph', 'extraordinary' and 'well realized' – giving it one of his highest scores for a SA Chardonnay, 97/100.

Graham Beck, Yin and Yang 2016
R 1,000 per set (Only 12 sets)

This is a unique offering of two nuanced but opposite Cap Classiques. When Pieter Ferreira and his team were making up their 2016 blends, they couldn't choose between the 60:40 Pinot/Chardonnay and the 60:40 Chardonnay/Pinot. So, they bottled both, creating the ultimate geek-out tasting of SA bubbly. This duo showcases two sides of a coin offering insight into the role of Pinot vs. Chardonnay in a blend. The Pinot-led Yin is more broad and savoury than the Chardonnay-dominated, precise Yang.
