If you follow us on Instagram, you’ll know that Jolette is visiting some of our favourite European producers this week, including Spain’s poster child for traditional Rioja – López de Heredia. We’re diving into this week’s selection with their 96-point Viña Tondonia Reserva 2001, a wine that has ‘fully captured all of the potential of this magical year’ (John Gilman). Moving to France, the De Fargues Sauternes 1996 is an absolute joy to drink, and Verzier’s Empreinte is a charming example of 2021 Syrah from Saint-Joseph. The 2018 LBV Port from Niepoort offers terrific value at R190 per 375ml bottle, and we round off our selection with the 2018 Pio Cesare Barolo, which was featured in the Wine Enthusiast’s ‘Best 100 Wines of 2022’!

López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva 2001
R 1,295 PER BOTTLE
From one of Rioja’s best-ever vintages and most famous vineyards, the 2001 Viña Tondonia Reserva is more than worthy of your attention. ‘I had the chance to taste a bottle … 10 years after it was released, and the wine has evolved beautifully and quite slowly,’ said Luis Gutiérrez of the Wine Advocate last year, scoring it a whopping 96+ points. This blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo was fermented in 153-year-old oak vats, matured in barrel for six years, and then spent another 16 years in bottle.

Verzier Saint-Joseph Empreinte 2021
R 670 PER BOTTLE
‘St Joseph displays varietal Syrah characteristics very transparently – more so than any of the other Northern Rhône appellations,’ writes Nick Jackson MW. The terroir of Verzier greatly contributed to their success in 2021, with the best wines from this cooler vintage coming from southeast-facing slopes with granite soils. ‘Some wines are excellent, in a fresh, crisp, and fragrant style’, says Decanter. The Verzier Empreinte 2021 is charming and approachable, showing softer tannins and notes of juniper, sage, clove, and blue fruits

Niepoort LBV Port 2018 (375ml)
R 190 PER BOTTLE
‘Port is for life, not just for Christmas,’ writes Neal Martin. Continuing the Douro’s sublime streak of Port vintages since 2015, 2018 is an ‘embarrassment of riches’, proclaims Decanter. ‘In 2018, overall conditions were excellent but in the Douro Superior they were exceptional.’ This Port is fresh, lively and full of character, delivering an appealing mix of spices and herbs.

‘Deep, layered and so expressive, the 2018 offers uncommon elegance right out of the gate,’ enthuses Vinous. This immaculate Nebbiolo is crafted from five estate-owned vineyards across five Barolo villages. Complex, nuanced and full bodied, it entices with dried cherry, plum, tobacco and garden herbs, supported by silky tannins.
