Your last chance to get hold of Querciabella Chianti Classico Friday, 17 June 2022

Thistle & Weed, beautiful Barbaresco & our upcoming Van Loggerenberg tasting

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Last week's guided tasting with Manfred Ing of Querciabella was a spectacular success. The graceful Chianti Classicos from this top Tuscan producer wowed our tasters, so you'll have to move quickly if you want to get hold of our remaining stock. The cooler weather also has us reaching for Niepoort's newly released 2019 Vintage Port, as well as a benchmark South African Merlot – Shannon Mount Bullet 2019. We round up this week's highlights with the understated yet impressive 2020 release of Glen Heatlie Grenache Blanc.

Shannon, Mount Bullet Merlot 2019
R 600 per bottle

Shannon Vineyards have hit it out of the park once again with their Mount Bullet Merlot 2019. This classy wine has been showered with accolades every vintage since 2015 – from the Prescient Top 10 to Platter's 5 stars – and is undoubtedly SA's finest Merlot. It boasts focused acidity and layers of bright blue fruit and earthy notes. Perfect for a winter's day, it's a pleasure to drink now, or lay it down for 10+ years.

Niepoort, Vintage Port 2019
R 1,500 per bottle

Since 1842, Niepoort Vinhos has been producing phenomenal Ports. The newly released 2019 Vintage Port has been called a 'Burgundian Port' by Jamie Goode (98 points), and scored 97-99 from Greg Sherwood and 96 from Wine Advocate respectively. A field blend from 80-100+ year-old vines, this is 'fabulously drinkable, deliciously fresh and vibrant, but eminently bold and characterful', writes Greg Sherwood. From a cooler vintage, the 2019 Port is reminiscent of the elegant 2008s. Drink now or keep until about 2065. See all our vintage Ports here.

Querciabella tasting review

Manfred Ing's passion for tightly knit, pure-fruited wines driven by a natural acidity was evident at our recent tasting as he guided us through the philosophy behind Querciabella's Chianti Classicos. Showcasing its ageability, the star of the night was the Chianti Classico Riserva for its graceful power and poise, while the Chianti Classico 'normale' is not far off, offering similar structure and elegance. With many of the wines selling out on the night, don't miss your chance to grab the last of the Querciabella Chianti Classico 2018'a wine made for food', says Manfred.

Glen Heatlie, Grenache Blanc 2020
R 260 per bottle

Joan Heatlie is passionate about Grenache Blanc. After stints as a winemaker at Mullineux, Reyneke and Solms Delta, she launched her own label: Glen Heatlie. This is the second release of her Grenache Blanc. The 2020 has a fresh pineapple intro that leads to a shy expression of white stone fruit and ripe lemon peel. At only 12.5% alcohol, the palate is energised and refreshing. If you like subtlety, this is the wine for you.
