Plus the ‘captivating’ Barolo & ‘on-point’ Pomerol we’ll be drinking this weekend Friday, 17 January 2025

‘Spellbinding’ Dehours Champagne, January Value Case, & a 95 pointer for R195!

It was lekker by die see, but it’s back to business as usual for most South Africans this week. Whether you’re looking for celebration or consolation, we’re kicking off our first Weekly roundup of 2025 with a cracking 95-pointer from Testalonga that’s sure to hit the spot. At just R195, the 2024 Baby Bandito Follow Your Dreams is a vibrant red with all the complexity and detail of a wine twice its price. Domaine Trimbach’s 2022 Alsace Riesling shows ‘gorgeous tension, lovely dryness and oh so much energy’ (Vinous), while Dehours Oeil de Perdrix Extra Brut Rosé NV is a must for Champagne lovers. From Bordeaux, La Pointe Pomerol 2021 is ‘delicious and certainly a success’, says Neal Martin, or splash out on one of the most stellar expressions of Barolo – Luigi Baudana Barolo Baudana 2019. For a mix of varieties and styles from France, Portugal, and closer to home, don’t miss this month’s Wine Cellar Insiders’ Case, with free delivery anywhere in South Africa.

Testalonga Baby Bandito Follow Your Dreams 2024
R 195 PER BOTTLE

How often do you come across a 95-point red for R195? This Carignan from Testalonga offers outstanding value. Think sour cherry, dried herbs and savoury nuances with notes of negroni and bright fruit. Enticing, layered and long,’ says Christian Eedes of Winemag.co.za. Keep it on hand to serve slightly chilled every evening.

Trimbach Riesling 2022
R 360 per bottle

For 400 years, family-run Domaine Trimbach has been crafting the single most admired dry Riesling made anywhere, according to Jancis Robinson MW. The 2022 vintage in Alsace was warm and dry with light rains during summer, which resulted in concentrated wines with great freshness. Racy and youthful on the palate, this wine is great for mid-summer and serves as a brilliant pairing for white fish and shellfish.

La Pointe Pomerol 2021
R 925 per bottle

Pomerol is known for some of the most sought-after wines in all of the fine wine world, with prices to match. La Pointe is a breath of fresh air at under R1 000 a bottle. The 2021 has a lovely nose of sweet cherry, mulberry and some dark fruits. That signature sweet spice element is noticeable and the palate is endowed with fine tension (Neal Martin). Ideally the wine should see another 3-5 years in bottle, but the 2021 is already drinking beautifully. Chill and enjoy over a three-hour period to allow the wine to unfurl.

This Champagne is 74% Meunier, 14% Chardonnay and 11% perpetual reserve, a combination that offers notes of orange peel, rose petal, rushed rock and white flowers. It’s pale pink in colour and so pure on the palate, with no dosage.

R 1,395 per bottle

Absolutely captivating, says Vinous, this Barolo is crafted from one of the finest sites in the region. Luigi Baudana is among the smallest estates in Barolo, with only 2.6 hectares.
