Rebel Rebel Shiraz 2021

Kayleigh Hattingh, the winemaker at Kaapzicht, is gaining a following with the second release from her own label: Rebel Rebel. The 2021 Shiraz is super-refined with ‘great structure and balance,’ enthuses Christian Eedes. ‘Lovely purity of fruit, bright acidity, and fine tannins’, he continues, scoring it 94 points. This is made in small quantities and worth seeking out.

Anselmo Mendes Alvarinho Parcela Única 2019

Forget what you think you know about one of Portugal’s most famous regions, Vinho Verde. This barrel-aged, single-vineyard Alvarinho from Anselmo Mendes is reminiscent of white Burgundy on the nose and a top South African Chardonnay on the palate. The Parcela Única sees nine months of ageing in 400-litre barrels and 12 months in the bottle. It’s flinty, floral and stony with a juicy acidity, creaminess, and an elegant finish. Proper stuff.

Bricco delle Viole, aka ‘Hill of Violets’, is one of the highest and most regarded of the historic Barolo crus. Dating back to vines planted in 1949, it enjoys the earliest sunrise and latest sunset – long days that are crucial for the ripening of Nebbiolo, the king of Italian wine grapes. GD Vajra’s 2018 Bricco Barolo is medium-bodied, floral and graceful, with Antonio Galloni calling it ‘finely cut and chiseled’. Drinking window until 2043!
