Must-have reds from one of Portugal’s greatest

Portuguese wine is more than Porto. Jancis Robinson’s standard advice for which wine regions to look out for says it all – Portugal offers ‘real originality and value’.

‘It’s no secret that the Douro has been making excellent still red wines for years,’ explains Decanter. Douro superstar Dirk Niepoort is among the country’s most famous names, creating still reds that ‘over-deliver in quality and flavour’ at very attractive prices, says Julia Harding MW.

The 2019 Vertente captures the essence of the Douro and is ‘one of the winery’s best values’, according to the Wine Advocate. A field-blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and others raised on schist, it’s a graceful, textured wine that shows elegant red and black fruit followed by foresty graphite notes on the palate.

From the limestone-clay soils of Bairrada DOC and made from the Baga grape, we can’t get enough of the Niepoort Lagar de Baixo 2020. It’s a wine bar wonder here in South Africa, bursting with crunchy red berry fruit, dried herbs and chalky minerality.

Charme 2020 ‘is a wine like no other’. Crafted from vines that are 70 to 100+ years old, it highlights Dirk's passion for Burgundian Pinot Noir. His aim here is ‘finesse, finesse, finesse’. Of the previous vintage Jancis Robinson noted: ‘The opposite end of the scale to most Douro reds: light, pale, delicate.’

Lastly, for delicious, refreshing drinkability and great value, always have a case of their 2020 Fabelhaft Tinto on hand.
