Along with a classic Beaujolais from historic Château Thivin Friday, 14 April 2023

97-pt Château Canon, Mullineux, & an introduction to Loire Cab Franc

There’s a nip in the air, and we’re welcoming autumn with a selection of reds. From power couple Chris and Andrea, we’re delighted to offer the newly released Mullineux Syrah 2020. Château Thivin’s Brouilly Reverdon 2021 is a Cru Beaujolais that shows the more sophisticated side of the Gamay grape, while the Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil Les Petits Grains 2016 from Frédéric Mabileau is a great introduction to Loire Cabernet Franc. Our final pick this week is the Canon Saint-Émilion 2017 – an ‘exquisite wine of the highest level’, says Antonio Galloni.

Mullineux Syrah 2020
R 445 PER BOTTLE

Gorgeous aromatics introduce a wine that’s very much at the heart of Swartland Syrah. Expect florals, some top notes of spice, deep fruit, plums and crushed pink pepper. This SA benchmark has just been released and is well worth stocking up on. ‘Wonderfully drinkable’, says Tim Atkin MW.

Frédéric Mabileau Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil Les Petits Grains 2016
R 330 PER BOTTLE

For cool-climate Cabernet Franc, look no further than the Loire Valley’s Frédéric Mabileau’s Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil Les Petits Grains 2016. The subtle herbaceousness gives lovely complexity to the brooding yet fresh blue and blackberry fruit. Raised completely in tank, it highlights the minerality and perfume that’s attributed to their sandy, gravelly soils.

Canon Saint-Émilion 2017
R 2,500 PER BOTTLE

From Saint-Émilion, Château Canon lies in the Right Bank's heartland for generous, energetic reds. Broad sentiment among the Bordelais and critics alike is that Canon is one of the flagbearers for the region. Galloni lavished the 2017 with praise, asserting that it’s ‘shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage’, with ‘off-the-charts richness and intensity’. Compared to other 2017s with the same 97-point score, Canon offers a 90%, 100% and 490% discount to Figeac, L’ Évangile and Ausone respectively. A must buy.
