What could be better during this stormy weather than wining and dining? For an entire afternoon of Italian indulgence, join our Piedmont Party at A Tavola next week Saturday. We'll take a deeper dive into the region's most celebrated wines at our upcoming 2019 Barolo tastings in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Speaking of travelling, Wine Cellar's Jolette Steyn has just returned from a whirlwind trip through France and Spain – jam-packed with memorable producer visits. This week's roundup features a selection of her international recommendations, from new-wave Rioja to the enigmatic Chenins of Domaine Huet in Vouvray; and from Tuscany, Querciabella's 98-point Palafreno 2019 is a veritable 'head turner' (Vinous).

Barolo 2019s: Undeniable Classicism – Wed 31 July in CT & Fri 2 Aug in JHB
FROM R 950 PER PERSON
The eagerly awaited 2019s Barolos are here! ‘It’s a safe bet that if winemakers are excited about a vintage, you should be too’, says the Wine Advocate of 2019. The excitement for this classical vintage is everywhere, and yet it’s not necessarily an easy vintage to understand. Is 2019 like the legendary 2016s, the finessed 2013s, powerful 2010s, or dark horse 2005? Join us as we taste through 12 Barolos from our favourite producers across the different communes. And don’t worry, we’ve got your palates covered – in Cape Town we’ll enjoy typical Piedmontese snacks during the flights and in Johannesburg we'll have starters and pizza to soothe those majestic tannins.

MacRobert & Canals Barranco del San Ginés 2021
R 1,100 PER BOTTLE
At Jolette’s recent visit, she was fascinated and heartened to see that the ‘New Rioja’ is really a hark-back to the ways of the ‘Old Rioja’. Barranco del San Ginés is a 1.18ha plot, registered in 1935 and farmed back to life over the last few decades. It’s a field blend of red and white grapes from impossibly old vines, planted in narrow rows that are just big enough for a mule and plough to get through, with fruit trees interplanted. The 2021 is a brilliant wine that’s ‘complex, deep and complete’ (Wine Advocate). Judging by the 2016 she tasted with Bryan, the 2021 will get even better with time.

Huet Le Mont Moelleux 2022
R 795 PER BOTTLE
Jolette tasted some Moelleux and 1er Tries vintages back to the nineties with Huet’s Sarah Hwang in Vouvray. She believes everyone should have at least one of these on the table – and a few in the cellar. Likely to outlive us all, these deep, precise Chenins are layered and complex without feeling heavy or overly sweet. Think pears and quinces, orange blossoms and lilies, chalky tension and mineral drive. ‘It is the quiet type that doesn't show off. It offers breadth without weight, which I always like about the Huet wines – they're like clouds of Chenin floating over your palate,’ writes Vinous.

Querciabella Palafreno 2019
R 2,300 PER BOTTLE
‘The 2019 Palafreno, 100% Merlot from Greve's Ruffoli district, is stunning, not to mention one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted here’, says Antonio Galloni of Vinous, scoring it 98 points. We only have a couple of cases left of this super fine wine. It’s densely packed with flavour, offering silky tannins, a persistent finish and a very long life ahead of it. Lovers of Merlot, rejoice!
