We’re thrilled to reveal that our Spanish reefer has landed, and there’s no shortage of gems to explore. This week we’re shining the spotlight on the spectacularly priced Raventós i Blanc Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 2022 – a crisp, complex bubbly from a legendary Spanish winemaking family. The hugely popular Torre de Oña Finca San Martín Crianza 2020 is a Rioja red that bridges traditional and modern styles beautifully, and the Laventura La Nave Blanco 2022 is the perfect summer sipper. The Provençale-like Can Sumoi La Rosa 2023 is a fresh, dry rosé with a savoury touch. Finally, Artuke Tinto 2023 delivers all the vibrant, crunchy notes you want in a young Tempranillo blend, making it the best tapas wine around.

Raventós i Blanc Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 2022
R 375 PER BOTTLE
Classically made, Spanish bubbly for only R375? Count us in! ‘It would be hard to tell the story of Cava without mentioning the Raventós family’ (Vinous). For the first time, we’ve imported some bubbles from one of the leading and most historic viticultural families in Penedès, who started growing vines in 1497. This Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs is made of Xarel.lo, Macabeo, Parellada and Malvasía de Sitges, aged in bottle on the lees for 18-24 months before disgorgement. It has textbook Blanc de Blancs flavours – green apple, white blossoms, brioche and a salty, chalky, super-precise palate. ‘Complex and expressive beyond its price point’, says the Wine Advocate.

Torre de Oña Finca San Martín Crianza 2020
R 285 PER BOTTLE
This 100% Tempranillo is one of our favourite Spanish value reds. Everything about Finca San Martin is inviting and approachable, and it bridges the gap between the very traditional and more modern styles of wine in Spain’s most famous wine region. From limestone soils at the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains – aged for 16 months in barrel and two years in bottle – it’s medium-bodied, fresh-fruited and full of flowers, with classic Rioja smoke and spice and sleek tannins. This should be your new house wine.

Laventura La Nave Blanco 2022
R 230 PER BOTTLE
Your soon-to-be favourite midweek white arrived on our shores a week ago. The 2022 is a fresh-footed blend of 90% Viura and 10% Garnacha Blanca that spent six months in concrete before bottling. A Swartland Young Gun, farming old vines back to life with yesteryear’s wisdom and techniques, Bryan MacRobert started ‘The Adventure’, Laventura, a bit more than a decade ago, and Wine Cellar is proud to follow him on this journey. ‘The style of the wines is elegant, balanced, fresh and transparent. A name to watch in the future,’ notes the Wine Advocate.

Can Sumoi La Rosa 2023
R 325 per bottle
Did someone say rosé (in a beautiful bottle) all day? This pale pink rosa from Penedès is a blend of Sumoll – a red grape variety – and Xarel·lo, a local white variety. It offers ‘white pepper and leafy notes with a pristine sour cherry core. ‘Dry and savoury, the 2023 is vibrant and vivid’ (Vinous). Can Sumoi was started in 2017 as a collaboration between Pepe Raventós and his childhood friend, Francesc Escala. The focus is on organically and biodynamically grown ancestral varieties at high altitudes, with minimal intervention in the cellar.

Artuke Tinto 2023
R 225 per bottle
According to Tim Atkin MW, 'Arturo de Miguel makes some of the greatest reds in Spain.' The whole-bunch, crunchy, violet, tasty young Tinto from Artuke is finally here. The 2023 is a blend of 95% Tempranillo with a 5% Viura. Brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel biodynamically farm 30 hectares of vines planted between 1920 and 2013. When I drove around with Arturo to all of their vineyards in June, I was struck by how happily and healthily these old vines grow. ‘Artuke has seen one of the best progressions in Rioja in the last few years and is one of the finest young family wineries in the region', says the Wine Advocate.
