‘Breathtaking’ Chapoutier, new Rhône auction, Luddite, & this month’s must-have value case

The Rhône takes centre stage in the first Strauss & Co auction of the year, offering a fantastic opportunity to acquire rare local and international wines from iconic estates. Those looking for value this week will love the 2022 Frontier from Glen Heatlie – think Grenache Blanc at its best – as well as the dense yet fresh Luddite Saboteur Red. Giulia Negri’s brilliant Barolos from the 2018 vintage are exceptionally pure, and we’re proud to bring you Chapoutier’s near-perfect Ermitage De L’Orée Blanc‘Breathtaking,’ exclaims James Suckling. We end off with this month’s Insiders’ Case, which will take you on a journey through SA, France and Spain.

LIVE Strauss & Co Rhône-Themed Auction
closes from 6pm on Monday

This auction features a stellar line-up, including six 100-pointers! The Rhône Valley selection is spearheaded by Château Rayas and Jean-Louis Chave, along with Clos des Papes, Beaucastel, Vieux Télégraphe, and Pierre Usseglio. Among the SA lots are Boekenhoutskloof, Boschkloof, David & Nadia, De Trafford, Hartenberg, Mullineux, Porseleinberg, Sadie Family, Saronsberg, Van Loggerenberg, and early vintages of The Foundry.

Glen Heatlie The Frontier Grenache Blanc 2022
R 200 PER BOTTLE

After winemaking stints at Mullineux, Reyneke and Solms-Delta, Joan Heatlie embarked on her own label and we’re so glad she did! The 2022 is the third iteration of The Frontier, an excellent small-batch Grenache Blanc. Showing lime zest, lifted white florals, river pebbles and a remarkably vibrant, pithy palate – we’re savouring every sip. The 2022 is from a high-altitude vineyard on the Piekenierskloof. We’ve secured 10 cases and it’s a must at R200 a bottle.

Luddite Saboteur Red 2021
R 285 PER BOTTLE

The 2021 Luddite Saboteur Red shows density and superb freshness, and we’re serving it slightly chilled this summer. The 2021 is bursting with red fruit along with notes of graphite and cassis. The chewy tannins and wonderful length make this a rewarding wine from the Verburgs. They’re always the life of the party, and this red is just as charming – who doesn't love popping a crown cap?

Giulia Negri Barolos Serradenari & La Tartufaia 2018
FROM R 775 PER BOTTLE

We had a quick meet-up with ‘Barolo girl’ Giulia Negri in the Cape last week. If you weren’t among the lucky few to taste her La Tartufaia and Serradenari 2018s at a popular wine bar off Kloof Street, don’t despair; we still have a few bottles left. The La Tartufaia has a sense of dark woodsy depth with spiced red cherry and classic tar and rose aromatics. From the highest vineyard parcel in Barolo, the Serradenari 2018 is next level. Poised and structured, it offers vibrant red fruit, pressed roses, and flint – it's delicate but intense and lingers forever.

Chapoutier Ermitage De L'Orée Blanc 2020
R 3,425 PER BOTTLE

Chapoutier's 'Sélections Parcellaires' (single-vineyard wines) are legendary. 2020 was a classic vintage in the Northern Rhône and one of their top wines is the Ermitage De L’Orée Blanc, from 100% Marsanne. More mineral than opulent, this wine is layered like a mille-feuille, with exceptional flavour intensity and drive. It scored 99 points from James Suckling and 98 from Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Spectator, and Decanter (who listed it as a Top Hermitage of 2020). The intensity and purity of the stony finish must be tasted to be believed,’ enthuses James Suckling.
