Leading our selection of favourites this week is Pierre 1er Saint-Émilion 2020 – a delicious new addition to our Bordeaux portfolio. From Beaujolais, and overdelivering on price and quality, we have the characterful Thivin Brouilly Reverdon 2021, while the 98-point 2021 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from Le Riche is ‘a vintage that will come to define premium quality Cabernet for years to come’, says Greg Sherwood MW. Caroline Rilemma’s Celestina White 2023 is a compelling release, and our June Insiders’ Case is ideal for your next winter dinner party, with superb Portuguese, Italian and local finds. Finally, Strauss & Co are delighted to announce their annual Sweets & Fortified Wine Auction – a rich offering of vintage wines that have stood the test of time.

Pierre 1er Saint-Émilion 2020
R 575 PER BOTTLE
This new arrival is drinking beautifully, with the typical richness that’s found in Saint-Émilion from the lower lying vineyards towards the Dordogne River. The property is often overlooked and driven past on the way to its illustrious neighbour, Figeac. Fruit forward, without being overdone, it’s a smart buy for those who wish to enjoy Saint-Émilion from a great vintage, without having to wait 10+ years. ‘(Pierre 1er) will drink well right out of the gate’, concludes Antonio Galloni, scoring it 92 points.

Thivin Brouilly Reverdon 2021
R 400 PER BOTTLE
We cannot say it enough: Go big on Beaujolais – the kingdom of Gamay. ‘Visiting Beaujolais reminds me of what it was like visiting the Côte d’Or 20 years ago,’ Neal Martin wrote recently. ‘Leave millionaires to fight over their Musigny and let wine lovers enjoy their Morgon in Bacchanalian revelry.’ Historic Château Thivin is a reference point for classical, age-worthy Cru Beaujolais, and their Brouilly Reverdon from the brilliant 2021 vintage is frankly a no-brainer.

Le Riche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
R 1,050 PER BOTTLE
Le Riche has been synonymous with the best Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon for more than two decades. The region is among the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon terroirs in the world, and there’s no other producer in Stellenbosch that’s as focused and dedicated to the ‘King of Grapes’ as Le Riche. This vintage-defining wine is ‘simply sublime, awesome even’, enthuses Greg Sherwood MW.

Celestina White 2023
R 325 PER BOTTLE
Caroline Rilemma of Caroline’s Fine Wines has her own Baardskeedersbos vineyards in Elim. The wine was first produced in 2009 and the 2023 release is a 50/50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. This is her first completely hands-on experience making the wine and it clearly exhibits the region’s marginal, saline and windswept character. The Celestina White is best enjoyed at least three to four years from vintage; only 1,350 bottles were made.
