Our December value case, sensational Sauternes, 97-pt Taaibosch Crescendo, & Trimbach Pinot

This week we’re shining the spotlight on the ultimate expression of Helderberg Cabernet Franc – the 2020 Taaibosch Crescendo. Taaibosch remains one of the most exciting new projects to come out of Stellenbosch and offers exceptional value compared to other top producers. From Young Guns Paul Hoogwerf and Doug Mylrea, the 2022 Maanschijn Herbarium Cape White has plenty of intrigue, while the Alvarinho Expressões 2019 is an exquisite Portuguese food wine from Anselmo Mendes. Don’t miss Trimbach’s Pinot Noir Réserve 2021 – the summer red you’ve been looking for – or end your festive meal with the ‘exceptional’ (Jane Anson) 95-point De Fargues Sauternes 1996. Rounding off our selection, we’ve just listed our December Insiders’ Case, featuring holiday favourites from SA, France and Germany.

Taaibosch Crescendo 2020
R 415 PER BOTTLE

The 2020 Taaibosch Crescendo is ‘another triumph’ for Schalk-Willem Joubert and the Taaibosch team, receiving a whopping 97 points from Tim Atkin. The 2020 is ‘a wine that exudes finesse and site expression’, enthuses Neal Martin; Atkin loves the ‘layered palate of fresh herbs, cassis and black cherry’. Both critics recommend you get in on the action before it reaches global market prices!

Maanschijn Herbarium Cape White 2022
R 250 PER BOTTLE

‘This is again a wine with plenty of interest,’ says Christian Eedes, and we like it even more. The Herbarium White 2022 is a particularly successful blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Chenin Blanc, 20% Semillon and 10% Chardonnay, from Stanford and Walker Bay fruit. It’s a unique wine that comes close to defining what a Cape South Coast White looks like. The aromatics are subdued, with some white stone fruit, blanched nuts and shy fynbos leading to layers of flavour on a crisp, textured, bone-dry palate.

Anselmo Mendes Alvarinho Expressões 2019
R 525 PER BOTTLE

We brought out the daring side of Chef Harald of Aubergine at the recent WSET Diploma graduation, where he took on the challenge of pairing artichoke soup with wine. The Anselmo Mendes Alvarinho Expressões 2019 hit it out of the park! Having undergone nine months of barrel maturation, its pure-fruited core of peach, pear and citrus offered beautiful complexity, with a persistent finish. This expression from a master of Portugal’s Vinho Verde region will make you want to explore more from Alvarinho.

Trimbach Pinot Noir Réserve 2021
R 445 PER BOTTLE

The Trimbach Pinot Noir Réserve 2021 is an unpretentious red that captures the chalky granitic and limestone soils of Alsace. Its fine-boned frame is fleshed out by bright cherry fruit, while earthy nuances and liquorice add a savoury undertow. This is the perfect wine for a sushi lunch or Provençale salad.

De Fargues Sauternes 1996 (375ml)
R 900 PER BOTTLE

The Lur Saluces family have been at De Fargues since 1472, with current proprietor Philippe now the 16th generation! Their De Fargues Sauternes 1996 is an absolute joy to drink, with layers of complexity and an acidity that leaves your palate clean and fresh. This is ideal with savoury dishes over the festive season. A 375ml bottle can easily be shared between four people as a standalone dessert, served chilled.

Wine Cellar Insiders' December Value Case
R 1,265 – FREE DELIVERY

This month’s Insiders’ Case features the latest Stars in the Dark Syrah from Minimalist Wines’ Sam Lambson. The 95-point Kruger Family Wines Cinsault is sure to impress, and the Roodekrantz 1983 Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2022 from the Swartland is ‘deep and smooth textured in the best sense’, says Christian Eedes. For a classic Rhône blend, we’re reaching for Chapoutier’s Bila-Haut Blanc 2021 this summer, or swirl a chilled glass of Strydom Family Wines Rosé. We finish the pack with the vibrant and delicious Schieferkopf Riesling from Baden, Germany.
