We’re obsessed with these Grower Champagnes

Since Wine Cellar’s inception in 2001, we’ve been obsessed with Champagne. We were among the first in South Africa to champion Grower Champagnes – small, family-owned producers who make and bottle wines from their own vineyards. We travel, we taste, and we sip, to bring you the best Champagnes before they become too famous (and expensive).

We’re delighted to introduce Blanc de Blancs specialist Michel Genet’s newest disgorgements and arrivals! Earlier this year, our team visited siblings Vincent, Agnès and Antoine Genet in the Grand Cru village of Chouilly, one of the northernmost crus of the prestigious Côte des Blancs. We remain ever-impressed with this aromatic and precise Chouilly style and the layers of complexity their Champagnes offer – from creaminess to electric freshness.

The first new arrival is Michel Genet Blanc de Blancs Spirit Grand Cru NV – one of our best-sellers, and for good reason. Think chalk, lemon, pears and jasmine with a lace-like creaminess on the palate. Also 100% Chardonnay is their vintage Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru from 2016, a step up in power, complexity and longevity. Finally, grab the last few bottles of their stunner of a rosé, the ‘Redblend 9208’ – a blend of 92% Chardonnay and 8% Pinot Noir.

Michel Genet: We’re obsessed with these Grower Champagnes

‘The future of Champagne has already begun, but the best is yet it to come.’
– Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

From a Champagne-producing family whose vinous history dates back more than a century, Michel Genet founded the business in 1965. His children now manage their 9-hectare estate, of which 7.6 hectares are planted with Chardonnay spread over 37 parcels! As with all of our producers, they pursue a natural and minimalist approach in the vineyard and the cellar.

Because of Chouilly’s proximity to the Marne River, the microclimate yields finessed, elegant and chalky Chardonnay-based Champagnes. The wines’ delicate richness makes them less austere and beautifully approachable in their youth.
