96-pt Sijnn Red 2019: ‘One of the most …distinctive reds in South Africa’ – Tim Atkin

Dear *|FNAME|*,

From the most unique vineyards in South Africa comes a set of wines that capture the imagination. These are wines like no other, with no reference points but themselves. The Sijnn White 2021 sits comfortably among the most elite Cape white blends, while the 96-point Sijnn Red 2019 remains as impressive as previous releases.

These are wines of excellence that consistently deliver individuality and transparent terroir expression. Both hail from Malgas along the Breede River – 'One of the most beautiful and complex terroirs in South Africa,’ writes Tim Atkin MW.

96-pt Sijnn Red 2019: ‘One of the most …distinctive reds in South Africa’ – Tim Atkin

The Sijnn Red 2019 defies categorisation. A blend of Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira (Tinta Amarela), Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre, it has immense fruit depth. There’s a wild savoury intro, rosemary and lavender flowers over darker fruit, balanced by wonderful complexity. Bone-dry with an inviting palate of dense black fruit, chiselled tannins, and lingering grip – it’s simply amazing. The send-off is salty, umami rich and leaves one deeply sated.

The Sijnn White 2021 is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne and Verdelho. ‘Think of this as a Malgas take on Eben Sadie's Palladius, albeit with fewer grape varieties in the mix’, comments Atkin. It’s an intriguing combination of ground almond, dried pineapple, pithy lemon peel and orange spritz with a great finish and superb length, leading to a light-footed chalkiness.

Everything they do at Sijnn revolves around their unique location and terroir. They believe in natural farming and winemaking and focus on blending Mediterranean-style varieties that are best suited to the climate.

Tasting notes

Sijnn, Red Blend 2019

‘One of the most unusual and distinctive reds in South Africa, sourced from a Grand Cru site near the Breede River, this is a unique blend of Syrah with Touriga Nacional, Tinta Amarela, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre. Sage, lavender and fynbos aromas lead into a palate of cassis, damson and blueberry fruit supported by stony intensity and subtle 20% new wood. Fresh, intense, concentrated and very long on the palate.’Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2022, 96/100

Sijnn, White Blend 2021

‘Think of this as a Malgas take on Eben Sadie's Palladius, albeit with fewer grape varieties in the mix. Chenin Blanc based with 19% Verdelho, Viognier and Roussanne, this is exotic yet focused, with peach, apricot and yellow apple flavours, subtle wood and a bright, tangy finish.’Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2022, 93/100
