What a release! Rockstar winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux need no introduction, and their latest releases set a new standard of excellence with their Signature range.

The 2021 Syrah is outstanding. The depth of fruit and powerful, fresh palate indicate that this wine has a long life ahead. A Platter’s five-star winner, the 2021 hails from six different vineyards across the region and represents everything the Swartland can achieve with Syrah. With production down by 25%, we only have a limited allocation available.

The unique and cellar-worthy Old Vines White is a benchmark for the white blend category in SA. Containing 60% Chenin Blanc, the 2023 scored 95 points from Christian Eedes and impresses with its intensity, persistence and clarity of fruit. It’s a must for every fine wine enthusiast.

These stunning releases are joined by the small-batch 2023 Straw Wine – one of SA’s finest sweet wines. Salty, pithy and utterly delicious, it was produced from two vineyards in the Swartland – one on granite soils and the other on schist. The grapes spent weeks on a straw mat to raisin in the sun before being pressed to barrel, where fermentation finished up around 10 months later.

Both the 2021 Syrah and 2023 Old Vines White are also available in magnums.

Mullineux Syrah 2021 (750ml and 1500ml)

‘90% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 12 months in 500-litre barrels, before being transferred to 5 000-litre foudre for another 12 months. Red and black berries, olive, fynbos, cured meat and white pepper on the nose while the palate is pure and poised – lovely clarity of fruit, bright acidity and powdery tannins, the finish long and savoury. A seamless wine that carries its alcohol of 14% extremely well.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

Mullineux Old Vines White 2023 (750ml and 1500ml)

‘60% Chenin Blanc, 15% Semillon, 13% Clairette Blanche, 7% Grenache Blanc, 5% Viognier and 3% Verdelho. Matured for 11 months in a combination of older barrels and foudre. Citrus, peach, herbs, ginger and a little waxy character on the nose. This vintage is substantial but completely harmonious – excellent fruit density, brisk acidity and a dry finish. Mullineux Straw Wine 2023

‘Grapes from two Paardeberg blocks that have the appropriate bunch structure to dry successfully and provide enough acidity. Left to dry outdoors before going to barrel for 12 months (fermentation takes 10 months to complete). Pronounced notes of straw and fynbos plus peach, apricot and quince. The palate is unctuous – very dense fruit and well-integrated acidity before a savoury finish. Makes a huge impression. Alcohol is 7.5% and RS is 336 g/l.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100
