Sustainability is the buzzword of the 21st century, and Reyneke continues to set the pace with their Cornerstone 2019. Barsac superstar Doisy-Daëne 2019 is ‘outstanding’, proclaims Neal Martin, and ideal for autumn sipping. It was also World Malbec Day this week! How better to celebrate than with the 2019 Malbec Reserva from Argentina’s Terrazas de los Andes. Thierry Germain’s 100% Cabernet Franc Saumur-Champigny La Marginale 2019 is ‘seductively charming’ (Wine Advocate), and we round off with the Kruger Family's Old Vines Palomino 2020 – a wonderful food partner.

Reyneke Cornerstone 2019
R 330 PER BOTTLE
This is possibly the most important wine from biodynamic leaders Reyneke. The profits go to their social upliftment program for workers on the farm. Besides the sustainability cred, it’s a sophisticated offering that’s Saint-Émilion in style – elegant with fresh edges from the 75% Cabernet Franc, the rest fleshed out with Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is coiled and tight right now but will reward cellaring over the next decade.

Terrazas de los Andes Malbec Reserva 2019
R 315 PER BOTTLE
‘Today, Argentina is producing the most exciting wines in its history’, writes Tim Atkin. This 2019 Reserva is sourced from 100 parcels of 20 to 80-year-old vines in Mendoza’s Lujan de Cuyo and Uco valleys. These high-altitude vineyards are at the very extremes for ripening Malbec, allowing for remarkable acidities and wines with purity, freshness and finesse. The perfect autumn braai companion at only R315.

Kruger Family Wines Old Vines Palomino 2020
R 225 PER BOTTLE
This is salty, elegant and bone dry. From a 46-year-old parcel in Piekenierskloof, it’s all about the linear palate. ‘Intricate and energetic and wonderfully refreshing to drink,’ notes Christian Eedes. The wine has only 12% alcohol, and a few days of skin contact have added a touch of grip. Pair with seafoods like fried white bait, deep-fried calamari, or grilled, delicate white fish.

Thierry Germain Saumur-Champigny La Marginale 2019
R 850 PER BOTTLE
Thierry Germain, the Bordelais who moved to the Loire and bought Domaine des Roches Neuves in 1991, is 'one of the appellation’s leading lights', says Vinous. According to Rebecca Gibb MW, his La Marginale 2019 ‘has underlying power and muscular tannins from its deep clay soils’ yet ‘retains its light body and lightness of touch’. This is Cabernet Franc at its finest. While it will give more than a decade of drinking pleasure, it’s too good to miss out on now.
