Leeu Passant new releases – Re-imagining the future

Dear *|FNAME|*,

The Leeu Passant Dry Red 2019 is inspired by some of South Africa's longest lasting and most unique wines. It's ultimately the result of Chris and Andrea Mullineux's careful discovery and deconstruction of what made the legendary SA wines of the 1950s, '60s and '70s so successful. The Dry Red is an immense wine that is shaping a future heritage.

The new releases are all excellent, with nuanced improvements across the range. The Chardonnay 2020 is electric; the 122-year-old Cinsault vineyard has produced a beguiling wine in 2020; and the Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 offers layered elegance. The Leeu Passant label is ambitious, and these releases clearly reflect their vision to bring the great wines of the past into the future.

The Leeu Passant Chardonnay 2020 is from a maritime, single Stellenbosch vineyard situated on the Helderberg. It's brimming with sunshine fruit, ripe citrus and vibrant natural acidity and is a Stellenbosch Chardonnay benchmark.

The 2020 Leeu Passant Wellington Old Vines Basson Cinsault, from vines planted in 1900, offers a haunting and ethereal array of delicate fruit and spice, followed by a layered and complex palate that astounds with its subtle power and regal tannic core. This wine is sure to last for decades!

From a combination of Stellenbosch vineyards, the Leeu Passant Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is a clear nod to Bordeaux. It has a medium-bodied, fresh palate supporting red and black fruit, with an earthy overlay. Deeply satisfying with lingering, ripe tannins.

The Old Vine Cinsault forms the inspirational heart of the Leeu Passant Dry Red 2019 blend. It's 58% granite-grown Polkadraai Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Helderberg Cabernet Franc, rounded out by Cinsault – the whole greater than the parts. It's a wine to cellar for many decades and is a true modern classic.

Tasting notes

Leeu Passant, Dry Red Wine 2019

'This red blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc and 14% Cinsault. The well-integrated proportions of the 2019 blend are reflected in this wine with an inviting wave of cassis, dried bramble and Bergamot orange on the nose and a firm structure, silky tannins and beautifully seamless finish. This wine is something very special and will requite if cellared optimally over the next few decades. It is best served at 16-18°C and will greatly benefit from decanting in its youth.' – The Mullineuxs

Leeu Passant, Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2020

'While capturing the Stellenbosch sunshine, this textured Chardonnay reflects its maritime climate with aromas of yellow grapefruit, wet-stone and a hint of Mebos. The vibrant palate delivers notes of Key lime sorbet followed by layers of stone-fruit and lemon curd. The touch of salinity and lush mouthfeel, is well balanced by a zesty acidity, leading up to a beautifully poised and defined finish. Best served at 10-12°C, this wine will show excellent when decanted and will reward if cellared optimally over 10 years.' – The Mullineuxs

Leeu Passant, Wellington Old Vines Basson Cinsault 2020

'This highly fragrant wine has an alluring nose suggesting fresh cherries, cranberry, rose petals and a hint of thyme. The palate is vibrant and silky in texture, with linear notes of pomegranate, pink peppercorns and cloves. As this wine ages the texture increasingly becomes plush and in laying it down will reward with more layers of complexity. The very fine tannins give a beautiful structure to the wine, exemplifying the Basson sense of place. Best served at 16-18°C.' – The Mullineuxs

Leeu Passant, Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

'This classically aromatic & supple Cabernet Sauvignon invites with notes of mulberry, dried orange rind, Kapokbos and pencil shavings on the nose. The palate opens to mouth-quenching cassis and fresh Sapphire plum, which are cupped by elegant, silky tannins. The richness and power of this wine are balanced by beautiful freshness and finesse.' – The Mullineuxs
