‘Nauticus is made with purchased grapes from different parts of the Hemel-en-Aarde region and uses stainless steel and smaller concrete egg and older French oak components. | Producer information | A long time ago, a young boy from Belgium had a dream to one day settle in the seaside village of Hermanus after it stole his heart. Fast-forward to 2021, when Frederik Herten and Céline Haspeslagh acquired the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley property of Sumaridge, together with Xavier Haspeslagh and his wife Christine Bouckaertand, and renamed it Hasher Family Estate. Lying along the banks of the Onrus River and De Bosdam, the vines are planted in unique clay soils with ancient, decomposed granite loam and quartzite. The estate owns some of the oldest vineyards in the valley – first established in 1997 – at roughly 200m above sea level and approximately 5.19km from the cool South Atlantic Ocean. The 19 hectares of vineyard plantings focus predominantly on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. |
