‘The Mackenzie blend has no Petit Verdot or Malbec in 2017 - they're only used in warmer years - so this is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Bay leaf and mint aromas are your passport to a wine with inky depths, serious tannins, toasty 60% new wood and tremendous structure. The Château Léoville-Las-Cases of the Cape. 2023-32’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 95/100

‘93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Merlot. Matured for 19 months in barrel, 50% new. Red currant, cassis, violets, some leafiness and pencil shavings on the nose while the palate has beautiful structure – medium bodied with great clarity of fruit, bright acidity and fine-grained tannins, the finish long and dry. An elegant wine (no matter its alcohol of 14.5%) that captures all that is good about this excellent vintage.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

‘Vibrant red fruit aromatics on the nose with touches of tobacco and cassis. A note of forest floor lifts from the glass. The palate is elegant, plush and velvety all at once with flavours of plums and cherries underpinned by an earthy tone. Drink now or age – The Mackenzie 2017 falls right on the cusp of drinkability and promises to deliver even more with ageing.’ – Winemaker

Producer information Hartenberg is situated in its own self-contained valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. It was created 30 years ago and has come a long way since its original poor parcel of dry gravelly soil. It was Carl Schultz, Hartenberg's Winemaker, who saw the potential in 'The Gravel Hill' and noted the superiority of the grapes that were grown there. Hartenberg was thus one of the first South African estates to separately vinify grapes from a particular terroir. The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. As such, the owners and staff have accepted responsibility for the conservation of the property through considered and sustainable use of all natural resources. They have various initiatives in place to ensure an environment where nature thrives.
