‘Gravel Hill was planted in 1968 and was one of the first single vineyard wines in South Africa. Violet and wild herb aromas segue into a palate that's powerful, layered and perfumed, with serious Cornas-like tannins, compact dark berry fruit flavours, fresh acidity and well-integrated 80% new wood. 2024-32’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 95/100

‘Matured for 19 months in barrel, 60% new. Red and black berries, smoky reduction, fynbos and pepper on the nose while the palate has succulent fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins. This is a powerful wine (alcohol: 14.5%) but it’s simultaneously poised and tightly knit. Full of flavour with a long and reassuringly dry finish.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

'The Gravel Hill 2017 is a wine that exudes sophistication and elegance from the very first sip. On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet of violets, perfumed notes, smoke, cassis, dark berries, and forest floor, each aroma gracefully intertwining with the others. On the palate, the Gravel Hill 2017 continues to impress with its savoury tone and meaty intensity. The tannins are firm and assertive, indicating the wine's potential to age gracefully for decades to come. This is a wine that demands attention and rewards contemplation, with each sip revealing new layers of flavour and nuance.' – Winemaker

Producer information Hartenberg is situated in its own self-contained valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. It was created 30 years ago and has come a long way since its original poor parcel of dry gravelly soil. It was Carl Schultz, Hartenberg's Winemaker, who saw the potential in 'The Gravel Hill' and noted the superiority of the grapes that were grown there. Hartenberg was thus one of the first South African estates to separately vinify grapes from a particular terroir. The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. As such, the owners and staff have accepted responsibility for the conservation of the property through considered and sustainable use of all natural resources. They have various initiatives in place to ensure an environment where nature thrives.
