Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon Rouge 2021 Bottle size: 750ml
France, Rhône
R4,850
‘Very classically Pavillon in its aromatic display, with hoisin sauce and some cassis and blackberry. Fine tannins, but this is not a huge vintage, a more Burgundian expression of Le Pavillon. Not terribly concentrated like some recent vintages, this will drink well young. Fresh, with strong acidity and an underlying smoky note. A lovely wine, but an atypically fine and compact Pavillon. From lieu-dit Les Bessards. 2025-2038’ – Matt Walls, Decanter, 96/100
‘Chapoutier's 2021 Ermitage le Pavillon features scents of crushed stone, cedar shavings and red raspberries on the nose. A top-notch effort from a challenging vintage, it's medium to full-bodied, quite taut and firm in the mouth but ripe and silky on the finish. 2025-2040’ – Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, 95/100
‘The concentrated 2021 Ermitage Le Pavillon uses grapes grown on the granitic soils of the Les Bessards lieu-dit. Swishing the glass unlocks an alluring perfume of pencil shavings, black cherry, blackberry, crushed violets, cedar and vanilla. Iodine elements complement the complex aromatic profile. Medium to full in body, polished and concentrated, the 2021 is a distinctively powerful rendition considering the challenging growing season. It finishes with excellent drive. Drinking window: 2027-2038’ – Nicholas Greinacher, Vinous, 94/100
‘Granite with petrichor aromas. From 4 ha of Les Bessards and 65-year-old vines. Yield 25–30 hl/ha. Cask sample. Much deeper crimson than Les Greffieux. Really quite intense. Haunting aromas and gorgeously layered with concentrated, velvety fruit within a fine corset. Really lovely wine with great ripeness and smokiness. Firm and Hermitage-like but with great expression and appeal already. Dangerously drinkable! 2024-2048.’ – Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 18/20
