Platter’s Guide Sémillon of the Year 2025
‘This ancient vine Semillon (with its hints of blushing Muscat) has never looked more alluring. The expansive but slender chassis gives way to a brittle, teasing finish, and the floral, silver needle, and jasmine notes are overwhelmingly rhythmic and hypnotic. 2022 Boek Sem experience is like no other Semillon on earth.’ - Matthew Jukes, matthewjukes.com, 19/20
‘"Wow!". That sums up what I feel about the latest vintage of this stunning Semillon from three parcels in Franschhoek, planted in 1902, 1936 and 1942. One of the Cape's greatest whites, made by one of its most talented winemakers in Gottfried Mocke, it has aromas of saffron, lanolin and nutmeg, stylish 70% new wood, a touch of petrichor and aniseed and layers of citrus, lemongrass and gunflint. 2026-35’ - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2024, 98/100
‘Standout example from ancient vines (1902, 1936 & 1942) including 2% muscat d’Alexandrie in precise & mineral 2022. Orange blossom, beeswax, white citrus pith & raw almond complexity. Excellent presence, with new-barrique (70%), concrete ‘egg’ & clay amphora giving savoury nuance & generous texture. Ageworthy, like 2021.’ - Platter’s Guide, 5* (97/100)
‘Creamy and textural, with complex layers and aromas of almond, waxed lemon, thyme, persimmon and fragrant apricot. Cedar, too. Full-bodied but with wonderful freshness. Full of fruit on the palate with a very long finish. From old vines planted in 1902, 1942 and 1936. Vinified 70% in new oak and 30% in concrete egg. Drink or hold.’ – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 95/100
