‘Suañé is an unusual combination of Viura and 25% Sauvignon Blanc, both sourced from the area around Haro. Fermented for 10 days on skins before ageing in mostly older French oak, this has chiselled acidity, green apple and citrus zest flavours, good extract and chalky minerality to spare. 2023-28.’ – Tim Atkin MW, 2023 Rioja Report, 93/100

‘2017 was a vintage to be forgotten, but it has produced some good wines, like the unusual 2017 Suañé Blanco Reserva—an amber colored white with a nose of macerated skins (quince paste, ripe apricot) and spices (nutmeg and clove), different and full of personality. It's a blend of 75% Viura and 25% Sauvignon Blanc that macerated with the skins for about 15 days; it was then put in 228-liter French oak barrels where it matured for 12 months with weekly bâtonnage and then decanted in tank for seven more months. It has 13% alcohol and a pH of 3.25. It has a medium-bodied palate with some chalkiness, fine tannins and an extremely tasty, almost salty finish. It is delicious but heavily marked by the process. It should age well. It was bottled in June 2019. 2022 – 2028.’ – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 93/100

Producer information Alonso & Pedrajo is a project born out of a friendship between Javier Alonso and Alberto Pedrajo. Started in 2011, they have since being crafting their wines from very old and newly planted vines in the village of Villalba de Rioja. 70% of their grapes come from around the village making up their three wine collections: La Pequeñita, Sauñé and Valdinero. Their wines are experimental, exciting and elegant characterized by its clay-calcareous soils as well as their continental and Atlantic climates.
