Wine Cellar Insiders, December Value Mixed 6-Case 750ml NVMixed country, Mixed region
Leeuwenkuil, Reserve Rosé 2019 – R 100
‘Enticing aromas of raspberry and pomegranate follow through onto the palate with additional flavours of ripe watermelon a tangy cranberry finish. An engaging yet elegant wine with finesse.’ – Leeuwenkuil
Pio Cesare, Gavi 2018 – R 295
‘Fresh and clean with spicy notes on the nose and salty, ripe fruit and rich, complex flavour; great ageing potential.’ – Pio Cesare
Opstal, Chenin Blanc 2018 – R 105
‘Spontaneous fermentation before maturation lasting eight months, 60% in foudre and 40% in tank. Stone fruit, straw and dried herbs on the nose. Good fruit concentration balanced by tangy acidity. Has just the right amount of heft.’ – Christian Eedes, 90/100
Bouchon, País Salvaje 2017 – R 260
‘Julio Bouchon is doing great things for the image of País, using wild vines to produce delicious examples of the grape. Pale, aromatic and crunchy, this has 30% whole bunches, layers of sweet red fruit and a long, tangy finish.’ – Tim Atkin MW, 92/100
Radford Dale, Thirst Gamay Noir 2019 – R 155
'There are currently only 8 ha of Gamay in the Cape and they have been replanting another 1 ha over the last few years in Karibib, an amphitheatre overlooking False Bay. Carbonic maceration. No oak, unfined. The name tells you the style they are aiming for. Minimal intervention. Light, vibrant cherry red. Scented and attractively dusty on the nose, like crushed stones – an impression of freshness before you even taste it. Light-bodied, and light on the mid palate, dry and juicy. Lightest of tannins but not without a delicate structure to hold the juicy fruit. Completely unpretentious and thirst-quenching and has real purity of flavours. No need to think too much about this one, just enjoy it.' – Julia Harding MW, 15.5/20
Gabriëlskloof, Rosebud Rosé 2018 – R 85
‘Flavours of papaya, rose and melon are apparent but not overpowering, with spicy red fruit in the background thanks to the Syrah component. Complex, but infinitely drinkable.’– Gabriëlskloof
