Mourvèdre is a late-ripening variety that thrives in abundant sunshine and has an affinity for cooling sea breezes. The most celebrated single-varietal expressions come from Bandol – the grape’s home on the Provence coast. When Mourvèdre is great, it offers the elegant structure of Bordeaux combined with the floral charm of Burgundy. Waterkloof proprietor Paul Boutinot is a lover of Bandol and found in Waterkloof the perfect site to grow Mourvèdre. Situated on the False Bay coast, it offers a very similar aspect, sea influence and climate to that of Bandol.

From two single vineyards, farmed biodynamically and about 4 km from the ocean, Nadia Barnard has produced South Africa’s finest single-cultivar Mourvèdre. The Waterkloof Circumstance Mourvèdre 2015 is elegant and fine-boned. This exciting wine affirms Boutinot’s vision and points to a bright future.

Tasting notes:
'A complex wine that keeps me going back to my glass with a fusion of savoury and sage notes and supple raspberry and dark fruit. It can be paired with a variety of dishes, but should show well with wild boar or lamb on the grill.' – Nadia Barnard, Winemaker

Winemaker's comments:
'We use organic and biodynamic methods and adhere to Old World, sustainable practices in our vineyards to ensure that the vines are nourished and in balance. Our soils are free of chemicals and are kept healthy by using plant extracts, fungi and bacteria from our own organic compost. We follow a ‘less is more’, minimal intervention winemaking philosophy for all our wines and the grapes are tasted at regular intervals to determine optimal ripeness and flavour development. In keeping with our philosophy of minimum intervention, this wine only underwent a basic filtration prior to bottling to ensure that the wine is enjoyed in its purest form.' – Nadia Barnard
