The Waterford Chardonnay is made from some of the oldest Chardonnay plantings in South Africa, planted in 1988.
'Planted back in 1988, Chardonnay remains the only white grape on Waterford's estate on the Helderberg. Showing some of the creaminess and breadth of the warmer 2018 vintage, but this subtly wooded number has lovely underlying minerality and citrus peel freshness. Drink 2021-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 93/100

'The 2018 Chardonnay comes from vines planted in 1988 and sees 22% new oak (whereas a decade ago it would have been around 45%.) It has a clean, crisp bouquet of light citrus and dried honey aromas with a brush of apricot and candle wax, developing more intensity with aeration. The palate is very taut and focused, offering beautifully judged acidity, tension and mineralité. It fans out well toward the finish, completing a superb Stellenbosch Chardonnay. Drink 2019-2028.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100

'Clean lime, peach & almond flavours on refreshingly light (12% alcohol) & bright 2018. From different part of the 32 year old block as Library sibling. Both fermented & aged in oak, this 18% new, adds a toasty nuance. Elegant though less intense than previous. Also in 1.5L.' – Platter's Guide, 4*

'A bright and vibrant olive-green hue on this single vineyard Chardonnay. The aromatics of this wine are driven by fresh peach pip, lime and a light touch of oak from barrel fermentation and aging. Our older vines still prove to produce lovely restrained, tightly structured wines that are rather perfumed when young, but develop beautifully during bottle maturation.' – Winemaker

Producer information The Waterford Estate is located in Blaauwklippen Valley in Stellenbosch. Of their 120-hectares, only half is plated with vines to allow for the preservation of the natural fauna and flora found on the estate. Waterford is owned by the Ord Family with Kevin Arnold as the Cellar Master and Managing Director. Decades of experience at Delheim and Rust en Vrede led Kevin to the prime Waterford Estate on the slopes of the Helderberg, where after much research, he planted a basket of Mediterranean varieties.
