Van Loggerenberg Wines, Break a Leg Blanc de Noir 750ml 2019South Africa, Stellenbosch
Lukas Van Loggerenberg is one of SA’s most exciting new winemakers. He was named '2018 Young Winemaker of the Year' by Tim Atkin MW. Arguably his most important wine was his first release of the Break a Leg in 2016. It was essential in getting his fledgeling winery on the go. Available only in small quantities, the previous vintages sold out in a flash.
'While previous vintages of the Break a Leg Blanc de Noir made from Cinsault by Lukas van Loggerenberg have, by all accounts, enjoyed significant commercial success, I’ve tended to find it a bit simple. The 2019, however, is a different kettle of fish. This is not about overt aromatics and flavours although there is a vague sense of blood orange both on the nose and palate. Rather, it is all about texture and energy – the fruit is pure, the acidity fresh, the finish nicely dry. It’s tightly wound, altogether less accessible than previous incarnations and consequently more serious. The best SA pink I’ve tasted in a long time.' – Christian Eedes
Grapes are from a 27-year-old vineyard planted in decomposed granite soils in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch. These bush vines are farmed solely for making this wine, the close proximity to the ocean and the constant sea breeze that’s blowing here gives the wines a great salty finish and gives great focus on the palate.
All grapes were destemmed and lightly pressed to extract the juice and a light colour without extracting too much tannin. The juice was left overnight to settle in a stainless steel tank without any settling enzymes. Settled juice then transferred to old French oak barrels to ferment naturally and also avoid the usual sweet flavours associated with blanc de noirs. The wine went through Malolactic fermentation which also adds complexity to the wine. The wine spent 8 months in barrel before bottling. No enzymes or commercial yeast was used in making the wines.
As the name suggests, Lukas had to undergo 2 big knee surgeries in our first harvest season as is shown by the leg in a brace on the label and the silhouette of the man plotting his next move. With the help of great friends and family, it all came together in the end and this wine is a celebration of hard times that you have to overcome and to never give up. In the same way, one wishes a performer to “break a leg” the name celebrates all the hard work we put in to achieve our goals. The protea on the stamp emphasizes our South African heritage while the tortoise symbolizes the speed at which Lukas was able to work during that first harvest. The donkey shown is a tongue in cheek reminder of how stubborn Lukas was in not compromising on doing any of the work himself despite not being as mobile as he would have liked to be.
