Europe appellation law states that variety labelled wines must constitute 85% of the variety in the wine. However, centuries-old tradition has lead Alsace to be exempted from this specification. As a result, wines labelled as Pinot Blanc can be 100% Pinot Blanc or Auxerrois or a blend of the two varieties but 100% Pinot Blanc cannot be labelled as Auxerrios. The two varieties were informally given the same names but the genetic origins show these grape varieties are not the same. Pinot Blanc is a mutation of Pinot Gris while Auxerrois is derived from Pinot and Gouais Blanc, a prolific grape which has propagated 80 varieties across Europe including Chardonnay and Riesling. Auxerrois is richer and more perfumed while Pinot Blanc offers the acidity and freshness to the blend.

Producer information One of the most exciting wine estates in the Alsace region is Domaine Trimbach. Founded in 1626, thirteen generations of the Trimbach family have promoted Alsace and its history through the centuries. Located in the heart of Ribeauvillé near Colmar, the vineyard is composed of a rich, mosaic soils including limestone, sandstone, marl and clay to name a few. These natural assets provide the perfect conditions for an array of aromatic grape varieties. Trimbach wines acquired true international acclaim in 1898 when Frédéric Emile Trimbach received the highest distinction at the International Wine Fair in Brussels. Today, the estate exports more than 85% of its wines and they are much sought-after by connoisseurs around the world.
