This 100% Tempranillo from Torre de Oña in Rioja has massive pedigree and offers delicious drinkability. From the famed La Rioja Alta’s stable, this svelte wine comes in at only R220. It blew us away at our tastings last week!
In 1890, five Basque wine growing families banded together to start the La Rioja Alta bodega. In 1995 they bought Torre de Oña, which is among the most exciting projects coming out of Rioja Alavesa* today. With Alejandro López at the helm, one of Decanter’s 2018 'Top 10 Best Revelation Winemakers', expect even greater things from this boutique bodega.
2018 Torre de Oña Finca San Martin bridges the gap between the very traditional and more modern styles of wine in Spain’s most famous wine region. From limestone soils at the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains – aged for 16 months in barrel and two years in bottle – this medium-bodied wine is fresh-fruited and full of violets, with classic Rioja smoke and spice and sleek tannins. It’s our new house wine.
*Rioja Alavesa is one of the three sub-regions of Rioja in Spain. The other two are Rioja Alta and Rioja Oriental.
