Thelema burst onto the scene in the late 1980s and, as confirmed at the Strauss & Co Fine Wine Auction, it has become one of SA’s best modern-day wine brands. Merlot is SA’s bestselling red wine category and Thelema is one of the country’s Merlot-producing pioneers.

Tasting notes:
'This wine exhibits alluring aromatics of dark pithy black plum, black berry spice, sweet leaf, earthy red currants, plum sauce and a cornucopia of led pencil wood spice, dried herbs and sweet cedar notes. Texturally, the palate weight is super sleek and taut harking back to the classical styles from the mid 1990s despite the elevated alcohol level at 14 abv. The tension, verve and stony minerality wash across the palate finishing with a long lingering note of sweet black bramble berry spice and a subtle cedar complexity. I love the linearity, precision and focus that is often absent in the majority of other South African single varietal Merlots. This wine’s crystalline acids bring an energy and crispness that frame the wine in such a classical manner.' – Greg Sherwood MW, 93+/100

'This wine is a blend of the best parcels within our merlot vineyards. A wine well structured and showing extraordinary concentrations of ripe berries and cedar wood. Will reward cellaring.' – Winemaker

About Thelema Mountain Vineyards:
The name Thelema comes from the Abbey of Thélème, a place dreamt up by François Rabelais. He was a monk, a doctor and a writer in sixteenth-century France and his utopian Abbey went against the religious ideals of the day. Rabelais’ motto was ‘laughing and drinking are the proper characteristics of man...for by wine we become divine.’ Since Rabelais spent a lot of time thinking about and writing memorable quotes on wine, Thelema saw it fitting to name their vineyards after him.
