The Vineyard Party I'm Your Huckleberry 2018 Bottle size: 750ml
South Africa, Stellenbosch
R295
'12% alcohol. Whole-bunch pressed juice fermented in older barrels (70%) with a portion skin contact fermented in open top tanks (30%) for about 15 days. No additions apart from SO2. Full yellow in colour. This has brightness and freshness, and also a bit of structure. There is a lovely chalky, green limey character here, with crystalline citrus fruit and a hint of green apple. Lovely freshness and presence on the palate with good acidity and a fine, spicy, nicely green twist on the finish. It’s fresh but textural with lots of detail and interest. This is a lovely expression of Semillon.' – Jamie Goode, Wineanorak.com, 93/100
'70% juice and 30% skin contact. Aromas of citrus, cut apple and peach plus some waxy, earthy notes. The palate has surprisingly good weight and texture for a wine with an alcohol of just 12% alcohol and the finish is long and very savoury.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100
'Paler than Here Be Dragons but still considerable gold in the colour. Not quite as spicy as Dragons, less resiny, but more tension and forward drive – arrow-like in its focus and breath-splitting intensity. An interesting adjacency of custard-apple silky vanilla-sweet creaminess with coruscatingly precise, citrus-spliced acidity. This pivots on needle point, showering the palate with glass slivers of green walnut, rosemary, dried-sage salt, greengage and lime. If ever a wine could pierce your heart, this would be it. Phenomenal depth and complexity for just 12%. And only just on the very cusp of its ascension. Very, very exciting wine. Jolette Steyn is a winemaker to watch. Mark my words.' – Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com, 17++/20
'I’m Your Huckleberry 2018 is a single origin partial skin-contact Sémillon. Delicately fragrant, the wine opens up to aromas of ginger, curry leaf, cardamom spice white blossoms, fennel, bright naartjie and nectarine. Spice and citrus (orange rind) carry over onto the palate. Classy skin contact adds to the concentration on the palate with fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acidity. Chalky and mineral notes are present throughout and lingers with a final note of nettle, ginger and sea-spray rounding things off.' – Jolette Steyn, Winemaker
Winemaker's notes:
'Classic whole-bunch pressed juice fermented in older barrels with a portion skin contact fermented in open for about 14 days. Spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation.
The name comes from a line in an old Western movie, Tombstone. The phrase signifies acceptance of a challenge, saying I’m the one you’re looking for, I’m game, I’m it. It’s basically a conversation between Sémillon and myself for our maiden vintage, saying ‘let’s go for it’.' – Jolette Steyn

Producer information | The Vineyard Party is a new project, now launching with two small-batch Sémillon bottlings from the maiden 2018 vintage. The goal here is to source biodiverse, sustainably farmed vineyard parcels, whilst working with avant-garde vinification techniques, and applying low intervention in the cellar. Behind the range is Jolette Steyn, a Young Gun independent. She has produced wine across four continents with 15 harvests under her belt, and before going solo, held winemaking roles at prominent SA estates over the past decade and a half. She holds a BSc degree in Oenology and Viticulture from Stellenbosch University, as well as an MSc in Oenology with stints in France, Italy and Spain completing her thesis in viticulture on Garnacha vineyards in Priorat, Spain. She has built an entire career on the self-proclaimed fact of being a wine geek and is deeply passionate about diversity and sustainability – in the soil, the vineyards, the people and the cellar. |
