'The Eleanor Chardonnay honours the matriarch of the Finlayson family who, with her husband Maurice, owned Hartenberg Estate (then "Montagne") from 1948 to 1977. Strong and resolute in character, yet always sophisticated and poised, who better personifies our super-premium Chardonnay?' – Hartenberg Estate

Tasting notes:
'The Eleanor is made with CY95, described by Carl Schultz as the best Dijon clone, planted in a single 0.4-hectare block on the estate in 1997. Leesy, concentrated and powerful, with fine oak, chiselled acidity and notes of honey, baking spices and citrus. Lovely, nuanced Chardonnay. Drink 2020-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 95/100

'From best-performing chardonnay parcel of Burgundy CY95 clone. Steely 2017 citrus-infused, with yellow peach & quince notes playing off the stony mineral element & adding complexity. Bright acidity keeps palate balanced, as does moderate 13.5% alcohol. Fine length & finish.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (93/100)

About Hartenberg Wine Estate:
Hartenberg is situated in its own self-contained valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. It was created 30 years ago and has come a long way since its original poor parcel of dry gravelly soil. Hartenberg was one of the first South African estates to separately vinify grapes from a particular terroir. The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. As such, the owners and staff have accepted responsibility for the conservation of the property through considered and sustainable use of all natural resources and various environmental initiatives.

It was created 30 years ago and has come a long way since its original poor parcel of dry gravelly soil. It was Carl Schultz, Hartenberg's Winemaker, who saw the potential in 'The Gravel Hill' and noted the superiority of the grapes that were grown there. Hartenberg was thus one of the first South African estates to separately vinify grapes from a particular terroir. The 170-hectare property has a pure water source running through it, and a number of birds and animals which call Hartenberg their home. They have various initiatives in place to ensure an environment where nature thrives.
