Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito 2021 Bottle size: 750ml
Italy, Sicily
R730
‘This shows notes of darker berries with red licorice and fresh ripe peaches. Intense with hints of moist clay soil and bark undertones. Full and steady on the palate with a firm backbone of chalky tannins that go on for minutes. Lot of tension and energy. Stays long on the palate, turning to a more smooth and powdery mouthfeel. Needs some time. Try after 2025.’ – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 96/100
‘From 80- to 100-year-old vines at 700 to 850 metres above sea level, Santo Spirito is defined by its large terraces and deep, ashy soils. Vinified in stainless steel then undergoing malo and ageing for 14 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux, with one final month in stainless steel, this is a deeply fragrant wine with spicy, earthy and floral perfume allied to dark berry notes, a fine, chalky texture and lovely verticality. Really fresh – slightly balsamic – and ethereal, it dances across the tongue carrying bundles of finely woven hedgerow fruits, black pepper spice and wood. It's still very young but you can expect this to reveal some succulent fruits with time. 2024-2036’ – James Button, Decanter, 95/100>br>
‘The 2021 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito is dark and dusty in character, yet impossible to resist. It slowly unleashes a core of crushed raspberries, mint leaf and sage. It’s silky and refined, with cooling acidity and pretty strawberry fruits complemented by rosy inner florals. A cascade of licorice and crunchy tart cranberry defines the finale, as the 2021 tapers off youthfully tense, nearly puckering the cheeks, yet only lightly structured. Patience is recommended, yet it will be hard to maintain. 2025-2031’ – Eric Guido, Vinous, 93/100
‘This silky red shows lovely balance, with supple tannins carrying flavors of juicy sun-dried cherry, Earl Grey tea, red licorice, iron and spices as they glide across the palate and through the lasting finish. Drink now through 2031.’ – Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 92/100

Producer information | Marc de Grazia is the owner and founder of Tenuta Delle Terre Nere and considered by many to be the pioneer in putting the region of Etna on the map. He was the driving force behind convincing the Italian wine industry the value of demarcating Contrada within their wine producing areas. Marc is a big fan of this classification system and has integrated the model into his own lineup. It is this kind of thinking and investigating that has made Marc and Terre Nere so successful. According to Robert Parker, ‘Terre Nere’s wines all possessed unbelievable freshness and complexity as well as huge perfumes that suggested Pinot Noir…These wines are astonishingly complex and ethereal efforts from the hillsides of Mt. Etna in Sicily.’ |
