Terre Nere Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo 2021 Bottle size: 750ml
Italy, Sicily
R700
‘Pure cherry fruit here, reminiscent of kirsch, with orange peel and an ashy, mineral backbone to it, almost like cracked flint or gunpowder. Similar aromas and flavors on both the nose and on the palate. Medium- to full-bodied, really tense and firm with chalky tannins and a lingering crushed granite and rock sensation on the palate. Seashells, too. Long.’ – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 96/100
‘Il Quadro delle Rose is a favoured parcel in Feudo di Mezzo, always the first Nerello Mascalese site to be harvested by the estate. It's situated at 600m on shallow, ashy soil and planted with 60- to 80-year-old vines, and offers a lovely rich fragrance of blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry and herbs. Rich and silky, it combines fruit forwardness with lip-smacking sapidity in a glorious way, backed by fine, ripe, grippy tannins, an undertow of fresh acidity, and some licks of wood and spice on the long finish. Lovely. 2024-2038’ – James Button, Decanter, 94/100
‘There's a snappy edge to the frame of tannins married to a bright mix of wild cherry, boysenberry, tea rose and star anise flavors in this lively red, which ends with a firm, minerally finish. Best from 2026 through 2031.’ – Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 93/100
‘Crushed rocks give way to wild strawberries, rosemary and pine as the 2021 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo blossoms in the glass. This is a lifted and finessed effort, with tart wild berries and violet inner florals resonating over a steadily building tannic tension. The 2021 finishes with a massive staining of primary concentration and a web of fine tannins. It then quickly resolves, releasing the palate from its structured clench while gradually allowing licorice nuances to fade. The Feudo di Mezzo will require time to come into balance, yet its fruit may not be up to the task. For now, I remain conservative. 2025-2032’ – Eric Guido, Vinous, 90/100

Producer information | Marc de Grazia is the owner and founder of Tenuta Delle Terre Nere and considered by many to be the pioneer in putting the region of Etna on the map. He was the driving force behind convincing the Italian wine industry the value of demarcating Contrada within their wine producing areas. Marc is a big fan of this classification system and has integrated the model into his own lineup. It is this kind of thinking and investigating that has made Marc and Terre Nere so successful. According to Robert Parker, ‘Terre Nere’s wines all possessed unbelievable freshness and complexity as well as huge perfumes that suggested Pinot Noir…These wines are astonishingly complex and ethereal efforts from the hillsides of Mt. Etna in Sicily.’ |
