'A Shiraz reflecting the elegance of granitic soils. It invites with subtle floral aromas and spice and earthy dried fynbos of the warm mountain slopes. Complex red and dark fruit flavours are complimented with irony beetroot, earthy rhubarb and black olives. The palate is elegant with a medium body but with big structural presence of firm, rustic tannins. A wine with great bottle-aging possibility. Decanting recommended young.' – Jasper Wickens, Winemaker

Tasting notes on the 2019 vintage:
'Attractive aromatics of red and blackberries, lilies, fynbos and white pepper while the palate is light and fresh with powdery tannins. Great fruit definition, balance and length.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

'2019 captures house-style elegance, freshness in its pure red fruit, lily perfume, supple feel & comfortably firm tannins. Already harmonious, has balance for further complexity over several years. Part wholebunch, year old oak, unfined.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)

'Funky, savoury and earthy, this is something of a low-intervention red, made with lots of whole bunches and showing notes of bramble, plum and subtle reduction, with some spicy wood, plenty of blood and offal and an earthy, complex finish. Drink 2022-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 93/100

Producer information Jasper Wickens, previously the assistant winemaker at Badenhorst Family Wines, has built up a following in a very short time – and for good reason. This Young Gun has a deft touch and his wines are always measured, typically ‘Swartland’ and, most of all, delicious! He established Swerwer in 2012 and the name, he says, ‘describes the lives of many young winemakers chasing the vintages across the globe.’
