'The wine has pale gold and copper tones. The nose invites with aromas of wild blossoms, stone fruit, green tea and a mineral flintiness. Flavours of ripe peach, nectarine, sour kei-apple and hottentots fig with a touch of ginger spice adds to the layered and textured palate, but finishes slightly savoury with a light tannin structure and soft acidity. Unique and special.' – Jasper Wickens, Winemaker

Tasting notes on the 2019 vintage:
'Amber in colour, as a result of some skin contact as well as the tint of the highly unusual Semillon Gris, this has considerable grip and a hint of tannins. Very lightly wooded, it's all about structure and flavours of quince, blood orange and fresh dough. Drink 2020-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 92/100

'Partial skin contact (max 12 days) imparts reddish-gold hue from red semillon on 2019. Silky, waxy richness well-contained by fresh tannic grip, clean savoury length. Natural ferment, old oak, 10 months.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (91/100)

'From Semillon Gris. A complex nose with notes of orange, peach, some waxy character, hay, earth and spice. Quite broad on the palate with soft acidity and a slight bitterness to the finish.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 90/100

Producer information Jasper Wickens, previously the assistant winemaker at Badenhorst Family Wines, has built up a following in a very short time – and for good reason. This Young Gun has a deft touch and his wines are always measured, typically ‘Swartland’ and, most of all, delicious! He established Swerwer in 2012 and the name, he says, ‘describes the lives of many young winemakers chasing the vintages across the globe.’
