Storm Wines Ridge Pinot Noir 2021 Bottle size: 750ml
South Africa, Hemel-en-Aarde
R800
‘Ridge comes from a markedly cooler site than its stablemates Ignis and Vrede and it shows in the structure and focus of the wine. Chiselled and pithy, with notes of ginger spice, blackcurrant leaf and red cherry and a twist of clove and tobacco leaf from 15% whole clusters. Delicious. 2023-30’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2022, 96/100
‘W.O. Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Matured for 11 months, 16% new. Red and black berries, musk and violets on the nose. Light bodied but the fruit expression is definite, the acidity zesty, the tannins very fine – understated and poised. Alc: 12.62%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100
‘Presenting as the darkest and firmest of the range, yet still with a pale ruby core, the 2021 Ridge Pinot Noir comes from the highest vineyards with which Storm works. Light to medium-bodied and with 12.6% alcohol, the palate has an elegant frame with tart cherry skin flavors that present a tight tannic edge; it still needs time and will be better with food. Give it another year in the bottle and enjoy it with seared duck breast and spiced salmon. Almost 2,800 bottles were filled after resting for 11 months in 16% new French oak with tight grain. 2024-2034’ – Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 93+/100

Producer information | Hannes Storm has spent nearly 2 decades in the pursuit of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay perfection. No single SA winemaker is more dedicated or focused on growing and vinifying Pinot and it shows. After 12 years as winemaker at Hamilton Russell, he started his eponymous label Storm Wines in 2012, and has since been focusing on the best-suited sites for this challenging variety. The remarkable Storm trio – the Ignis, Ridge and Vrede Pinot Noirs each come from one of the three appellations in the Hemel-en-Aarde. Storm Wines is the only producer with Pinots from each of these three appellations. If you have not tried these, you are missing out on South Africa’s benchmark Pinot Noirs. |
