Storm Wines, Ridge Chardonnay 750ml 2019South Africa, Hemel-en-Aarde
'The 2019 vintage will be remembered as extremely challenging and extremely low-yielding but immensely rewarding. We were lucky in the sense that fires were put out long before they could reach the Vrede vineyard but challenges from a fungal perspective kept us on our toes otherwise. Due to the prolonged drought conditions in the Cape Winelands, yields in the Vrede Chardonnay vineyard dropped to an all-time low of 1.5 t/ha, after which a wine with pure, refined character was bottled.' – Hannes Storm
'W.O. Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Aromatics of pear, peach and citrus with a hint of earthiness. Slightly sweeter and rounder than its counterpart above but hardly weighty. Lovely fruit expression matched by bright acidity, this has a winning sleekness about it.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100
'Wow, this is a scintillating new wine from Hannes Storm! More chiselled and fine compared to the Vrede, it shows a coiled acidity and just incredible depth. Think Corton-Charlemagne with its white fruits, minerally guise and superb layers. Another Chardonnay at the top of the pile.' – Roland Peens (April 2020)
About Storm Wines:
Hannes Storm has spent nearly 2 decades in the pursuit of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay perfection. No single SA winemaker is more dedicated or focused on growing and vinifying Pinot and it shows. After 12 years as winemaker at Hamilton Russell, he started his eponymous label Storm Wines in 2012, and has since been focusing on the best-suited sites for this challenging variety. The remarkable Storm trio – the Ignis, Ridge and Vrede Pinot Noirs each come from one of the three appellations in the Hemel-en-Aarde. Storm Wines is the only producer with Pinots from each of these three appellations. If you have not tried these, you are missing out on South Africa’s benchmark Pinot Noirs.
