| Producer information | The vision of winemaker Koen Roose was to produce elegant wines that are sexy and pure but at the same time unique, a little wild even. Squeaky clean is not for him. Personality is important and at Spioenkop, whether it's to do with his atypical vineyard plantings or the combination of Old and New World in his boutique wine cellar, technology and laboratory analyses will only be used to assist the winemaker and never to detract from the importance of human involvement. 'At the end of the day it's about what you feel and taste in your mouth. Taste intensity is crucial,' stresses Koen. He produces one of the finest Rieslings in South Africa. The high altitude and cool climate of the Spioenkop terrior in Elgin has proven to be ideal for this slate and minerally styled wine. John Platter selected the 2013 as one of his 7 wines to present at the 2015 Swartland Revolution, saying that it was the finest South African Riesling that he has ever tasted. |
