'All own vineyard grapes and vinified in the Loire Sancerre style. Rich, powerful and creamy, thanks to a little bit of skin contact in the press, but well balanced with a fine dose of minerality that lingers in the mouth. This is true gastronomic class.' – Koen Roose, Winemaker

Tasting notes on the 2017 vintage:
'Roose insists on holding his Sauvignon Blanc back and this certainly does not trade off obvious primary character. A complex and subtle nose – hints of floral perfume, citrus, peach, blackcurrant and just a little leesy complexity while the palate shows dense fruit and racy acidity before a savoury finish.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100

'One of the few (only?) Cape Sauvignon Blancs that's grown on the lyre system, this is typical of the herbal, focused, food-friendly style that's Koen Roose's speciality. Taut and refreshing, this is acidity driven with a bone-dry finish. Drink 2020-23.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 93/100

Producer information Spioenkop Wines, situated in the Elgin Valley, was established in 2008 with Koen Roose as winemaker. Koen’s philosophy is that of low intervention, allowing the wines to express their region. His single-minded, terroir-driven approach encapsulates the passion that will redefine the Cape wine industry. Biodynamic practices are also followed, although Spioenkop is not certified biodynamic. The high altitude and cool climate of the Spioenkop terrior has aided in Spioenkop producing one of the finest Rieslings in SA. John Platter selected the 2013 as one of his 7 wines to present at the 2015 Swartland Revolution, saying that it was the finest South African Riesling that he has ever tasted.
