'Grapes from Stellenbosch. Matured for 12 months in French oak, 50% new. Complex aromatics of red cherry, violets, dried herbs, spice, earth and a touch of cured meat. The palate is light yet intensely flavoured. Pure fruit, lemon-like acidity and fine tannins, the finish super-dry.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100

'Koen Roose sources this elegant, Pinot Noir-influenced Pinotage from sandstone and granite soils in the Bottelary Hills rather than his Elgin home base. Deftly wooded in 55% new barrels, it has juicy plum and raspberry fruit, fine tannins and stony freshness. Drink 2022-27.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 93/100

'Always one of SA’s freshest. From Stellenbosch’s Bottelary Hills, 2019 well-balanced, variety’s bright acidity checked by generous black berry fruit, which is enhanced by fynbos & black olive nuances. Accomplished, with 55% new oak unobtrusively supportive.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (93/100)

'Fermented with 20% whole bunches and aged for 10 months in 55% new wood, this is juicy plum and raspberry fruit, fine tannins and stony freshness. A medium bodied wine with a dense, pure and wonderful acidity.' – Koen Roose, Winemaker

Producer information Spioenkop Wines, situated in the Elgin Valley, was established in 2008 with Koen Roose as winemaker. Koen’s philosophy is that of low intervention, allowing the wines to express their region. His single-minded, terroir-driven approach encapsulates the passion that will redefine the Cape wine industry. Biodynamic practices are also followed, although Spioenkop is not certified biodynamic. The high altitude and cool climate of the Spioenkop terrior has aided in Spioenkop producing one of the finest Rieslings in SA. John Platter selected the 2013 as one of his 7 wines to present at the 2015 Swartland Revolution, saying that it was the finest South African Riesling that he has ever tasted.
