Going the whole hog – Serious fun
'Fun on the outside, and serious on the inside.' – Dave Wibberley, Spider Pig
While wine can sometimes seem exclusive and unapproachable, these fine bottles of 'swine' from the Spider Pig pen are all about inclusion and fun. At Wine Cellar wine excellence comes first and, crucially, these are all delicious, excellent quality wines offering 'pig-ture' perfect terroir expression.
Since 2015, the Spider Pig team have been collaborating with some of SA's rockstar winemakers, including the likes of Duncan Savage, Christo le Riche, Stephanie Wiid and Tremayne Smith to name but a few. We think this is their most refined set to date.
While certainly not boar-ing, these are purposefully crafted fine wines and with 'sow' many reasons to enjoy them, go on and have some fun. Buy the pack as is, or 'pig' and mix as you wish.
Kicking off the selection, the 2020 YAY ol' Pig Old Vine Cinsault is fresh and crunchy with pretty fruit. Light in style (only 12.5% alc.), it has nuanced, backward fruit supported by juicy, pure deliciousness on the palate.
Taking its cue from the past success of the Cape's heritage blend, the impressive 2020 Black Pig Old School Blend is 60% Cinsault with classic Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon. It combines great perfume and delicate fruit expression with a precise palate that is detailed and delineated.
The 2020 Roaming Pig, with its Rhône aspirations, is a blend of 50% Piekenierskloof Grenache, 40% Swartland Syrah and 10% Stellenbosch Cinsault. It is taut with attractive, reductive notes and shy, backward fruit. There is a hint of whole-bunch spice that leads on to a bright, vivacious palate.
Made by Duncan Savage, the 3-D Pig 2020 Red Blend is a Bordeaux-style red. While it has proper gravitas, it is elegant and offers some serious drinking from a masterful winemaker.
The Pigs Back 2020 Pinot Noir is a quintessential Elgin Pinot with brooding, dark, plummy fruit, a good tannin grip and a fresh, spicy lift from the 10% whole-bunch. A whiff of quality French oak (25% new) from the Chassin, Gillet and François Frères 300L barrels, rounds out this classy glass of wine.
Finally, The Red Hog 2020 Swartland Syrah is a spot-on, classic Swartland Syrah with clean, pure fruit concentration and crushed stone minerality that follows on to a dark, juicy palate with some real seriousness. There is a quiet power to this wine the captures the revolutionary Swartland spirit.
